GENESIS RELOADED

GENESIS RELOADED

PART ONE: INTRODUCTION

“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the

end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” (Daniel 12:4)

Daniel tells us that with the passing of history knowledge would increase, and man would begin to unravel the mysteries of God’s Word. For many years scientists and theologians have been in conflict with one another over one main issue: Is our universe thousands, or billions of years old? Before you are so quick to respond with the pat answer, please consider the following examples from history.

When Christopher Columbus endeavored to sail the Atlantic in search of new lands, there were many that viewed this attempt as a suicide mission. Some believed there were monstrous sea creatures waiting, which would gobble up him and his crew. Others believed that if he ventured too far out into uncharted waters, he would eventually fall off the edge of the earth. That’s right. There were many who once believed that the earth was flat, perhaps because a literal interpretation of Biblical passages that spoke of the ‘four corners’ of the earth (Isaiah 11:12; Revelation 7:1) was adhered to. But thanks to the advances of modern science, we now know that these were merely pagan superstitions, which were believed out of ignorance.

All throughout history, God has raised up various individuals to challenge established systems of belief. One such person was Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), an Italian astronomer and physicist, who actually had the nerve, in defiance of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, to agree with the Copernican model of our solar system – that the earth revolved around the sun. So in 1633, he was dragged off to stand before the Inquisition as a heretic, and was forced to publicly renounce his convictions. What was his crime? He disagreed with the established authorities’ teaching on this matter, plain and simple. This was a dangerous man indeed, an independent thinker armed with a telescope, and he had to be dealt with.

“It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.” – Voltaire (1694-1778), French writer
“Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.” – Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Of course, science would later vindicate Galileo, who in 1638 went on to author his Dialogues on the New Science, which forcefully restated his earlier discoveries. But this shows how authority figures are not easily dissuaded from their beliefs, because to admit error is to concede a degree of control. And those in authority do not want to concede control.

“The truth is that Christian theology, like every other theology, is not only opposed to the scientific spirit; it is also opposed to all other attempts at rational thinking.  Not by accident does Genesis 3 make the father of knowledge a serpent – slimy, sneaking and abominable.  Since the earliest days the church as an organization has thrown itself violently against every effort to liberate the body and mind of man. It has been, at all times and everywhere, the habitual and incorrigible defender of bad governments, bad laws, bad social theories, bad institutions.  It was, for centuries, an apologist for slavery, as it was the apologist for the divine right of kings.” – H. L. Mencken (1880-1956) American journalist, editor, essayist, linguist, lexicographer, critic
“The doctrine of blind obedience and unqualified submission to any human power, whether civil or ecclesiastical, is the doctrine of despotism, and ought to have no place among Republicans and Christians.” – Angelica Grimke (1805-1879) Source: Anti-Slavery Examiner, September 1836

The truth is that many do not have the courage, nor do they have the humility, even in the face of an overwhelming amount of evidence, to admit it when they are wrong. People could learn a thing or two from a couple of well-known figures from our past:

“Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.” – Confucius
“The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.” – William Shakespeare

It is high time to reexamine the Genesis story. Thanks to Albert Einstein’s well-tested theory (now a proven, scientific fact) of relativity, there is no longer any reason why science and the Bible should be at odds. In the following video, nuclear physicist Dr. Gerald Schroeder does a nice job of explaining why science and the Bible must agree.

PART TWO: THE LAW OF RELATIVITY

THE DOCTRINE OF THE ANNIHILATION OF THE WICKED

THE DOCTRINE OF THE ANNIHILATION OF THE WICKED

“Everlasting torment is intolerable from a moral point of view because it makes God into a bloodthirsty monster who maintains an everlasting Auschwitz for victims whom he does not even allow to die. How can Christians possibly project a deity of such cruelty and vindictiveness whose ways include inflicting everlasting torture upon his creatures, however sinful they may have been? Surely a God who would do such a thing is more nearly like Satan than like God, at least by any ordinary moral standards, and by the gospel itself.” — Clark Pinnock, Professor and Noted Evangelical Author

“Well, emotionally, I find the concept intolerable and do not understand how people can live with it without either cauterizing their feelings or cracking under the strain.” — John R. W. Stott, Rector of All Soul’s church in London

And now, who is responsible for this God-dishonoring doctrine? And what is his purpose? The promulgator of it is Satan himself; and his purpose in introducing it has been to frighten the people away from studying the Bible and to make them hate God. — Joseph Franklin Rutherford, Watchtower Society’s Second President

It is precisely feelings such as these that have led many good Christian believers to reject the fundamentalist’s teaching concerning everlasting punishment in hell, and rightfully so! The desire for a kinder, gentler theology has driven many to seek refuge elsewhere. The doctrine of the annihilation of the wicked provides a satisfactory explanation to those who wish to see God as a merciful Father, and at the same time as a stern Executioner of justice.

The doctrine of annihilation teaches that all who have either rejected Christ, or who have not had the opportunity to make a decision for Christ, who is admittedly the only Savior of the world, will eventually be blotted out of existence. Groups that teach this doctrine in one form or another include Seventh-Day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christadelphians, Mormons, and Herbert Armstrong’s Worldwide Church of God. Although I will wholeheartedly agree that this form of “punishment” is a billion times more merciful than the doctrine of eternal torment, there is nothing in Scripture to support its validity. In order to clearly show this, I can do no better than to post the following excerpt from Andrew Jukes’ The Restitution of All Things.

Scripture Use of the Words “Death” and “Destruction.”

The opinion of the annihilation of the wicked, which has at different times been held by some as a refuge from the doctrine of never-ending punishment, is not only opposed to the whole analogy of our regeneration which shows how death and judgment are the only way of life and deliverance for a fallen creature, but also so directly contradicts what is said of “death” in Scripture that it is difficult to conceive how it could ever have been accepted by believers. Even before the reason of the Cross is seen, the very letter of Scripture, one might have thought, would have kept men from concluding that the “death,” “destruction,” and “perishing,” of the wicked means their non-existence or annihilation. For what is “death”? What is “destruction”? How are these words invariably used in Holy Scripture?

First, as to “death,” are any of the varied deaths, which Scripture speaks of as incident to man, his non-existence or annihilation? Take as examples the deaths referred to by St. Paul, in the sixth, seventh, and eighth chapters of the Epistle to the Romans. We read (Romans 6:7): “He that is dead is freed from sin.” Is this “death,” which is freedom from sin, non-existence or annihilation? Again, where the Apostle says (Romans 7:9): “I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died,” was this “death,” wrought in him by the law, annihilation? Again, where he says (Romans 8:6): “To be carnally minded is death,” is this death non-existence or annihilation? And again, when he says (Romans 8:38): “Neither death nor life shall separate us,” is the “death” here referred to annihilation? When Adam died on the day he sinned (Genesis 2:17), was this annihilation? When his body died and turned to dust (Genesis 5:5), was this annihilation? Is our “death in trespasses and sins,” (Ephesians 2:1,2) annihilation? Is our “death to sin,” (Romans 6:11) annihilation? When the “corn of wheat falls into the ground and dies,” (John 12:24) is it annihilated; or is St. Paul right in saying (I Corinthians 15:37): “That which thou sowest is not quickened except it die?” Do not these and similar uses of the word prove beyond all question, that whatever else these deaths may be, not one of them is non-existence or annihilation? On what grounds, I ask, are we to assign a sense to this particular death which admittedly the word “death” has not and cannot have elsewhere? Where is the proof that there is and can be no resurrection from the second death?

The truth is, death for man is simply an end to, and separation from, some given form of life in which he has lived. Death to God is separation from His world of light, by the destruction, through the lie of the serpent, of the divine life of light and love in us. Death to sin, the exact converse of this, is the separation from the world of darkness, by the destruction, through the truth, of the dark life of unbelief and self-love. The death wrought by the law is the end of, and separation from, our fallen carnal life of self-sufficiency; while what is commonly called death, namely the death of the body, is simply our separation from the outward world, in which we live, as partakers of its outward life, while we are in the body.

Once let us see that there are three worlds, each having its own life — a light world, a dark world, and this outward seen world — and then what is said in Scripture of the new birth, or of the varied deaths we pass through, becomes at once self-evident. For the only way into any world is by a birth into it, even as the only way out of any world is by a death to it. We have by sin died to God’s light-world, to fall into and live in a spirit-world of darkness. We must by the truth, that is by Christ, die to this dark spirit-world, to return to live in God’s light-world. The outward birth and death of the body, and its life, have only to do with the outward seen world.

For this reason it is that the word “destruction,” as used in Scripture, never means annihilation. Take for instance the words of the 90th Psalm, “Thou turnest man to destruction: again Thou sayest, Come again, ye children of men.” Can “destruction” here be annihilation? Is it not rather that dissolution which must take place if fallen creatures are ever to be brought back perfectly to God’s kingdom? So again, Job says (Job 19:10): “He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone”; and again, (Job 9: 22): “This one thing I said, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.” But does he mean to say that he is brought to non-existence, or that the “perfect” will be so destroyed, that they will exist no longer? So, again, St. Peter says (2 Peter 3:6): “The world that then was perished.” So, again, of the present heavens and earth it is said (Hebrews 1:11,12): “They shall perish, . . . and be changed.” So, again, both of Israel and Jerusalem it is said (Deuteronomy 30:18; Jeremiah 12:17, 15:6) that they shall be “destroyed” and “perish.” But does any one suppose that therefore they will be annihilated? So, again, as to the expression, “them that perish,” sometimes translated “the lost” (see I Corinthians 1:18; II Corinthians 2:15, 4:3); do we not know that these “lost,” though they “perish,” still exist, and exist both as “lost” ones and “saved” ones, as text upon text will abundantly testify? So as to the righteous, in the well-known passage of Isaiah 57:1: “The righteous “perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart”– is this “perishing” non-existence? So, again, where we read in Psalm 83:13-18:

“O my God, make them like the whirling dust; as stubble before the wind. As the fire that burneth the forest, and as the flame that setteth the mountains on fire. So pursue them with thy tempest, and terrify them with thy storm. Fill their faces with confusion, THAT THEY MAY SEEK THY NAME, O Jehovah. Let them be put to shame and dismayed for ever (Septuagint: aion); yea, let them be confounded and perish, THAT THEY MAY KNOW that thou alone, whose name is Jehovah, art the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:13-18; 1901 American Standard Version)

[Judgment in the lake of fire, which I strongly believe is vividly described here in Psalm 83, awaits all of those who have not been judged while yet in this body of sin. But God’s righteous judgment will accomplish the purpose: “THAT THEY MAY KNOW that Thou alone, whose Name is the Lord. And at that Name EVERY knee shall bow, and EVERY tongue WILL CONFESS that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the GLORY of God the Father!” – GC]

So as to the question (Psalm 88:10,11): “Wilt Thou shew wonders to the dead? Shall the dead arise and praise Thee? Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the grave, or Thy faithfulness in destruction?” is the true answer Yes, or No? Is not the “losing” or “destruction” of our fallen life the only way to a better one? Does not our Lord Himself say more than once (Matthew 10:39, 16:25; John 12:25) that the way to “save our life,” or “soul,” is to “lose it,” or “have it destroyed,” in its fallen form, that it may be re-created?

These last words should of themselves settle this question, for in one place (Matthew 10:39) they occur in immediate connection (see verse 28) with those other well-known words, as to “fearing him who can destroy both body and soul in hell,” which are constantly quoted by some to prove, as they think, that “destruction” must be non-existence. And yet, in the very closest connection with these words, our Lord repeats the self-same word “destroy” (in our Authorized Version translated “lose” it is the word apollumi, on which some build so much) to express that death and dissolution of the soul, which, so far from bringing it to non-existence, is the appointed way to save it. Christ saves it, as we have seen, by death; for being fallen into sin, what is needed is “that the body of sin should be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin” (Romans 6:6). The elect, that is the first-fruits, are the living proof of this. A “new man” is created in them, and the “old man” dies and is destroyed, while yet he in whom all this is done remains through all the same person. It may be, and is, a riddle, like “dying, and behold we live: having nothing, and yet possessing all things”; yet it is only the riddle of the Cross, that “by death God destroys him that has the power of death.” Therefore, though destruction, like death, may be, and is, a ceasing from some particular form of life in which man has lived, yet it is never non-existence absolutely; rather it is the means to bring the fallen creature into a new life, a chaos being ever the necessary condition for a new creation.

As for the argument, founded by some on the word apollumi, that because it is one of the strongest in the Greek language to express destruction, therefore that destruction must be irremediable, the simple answer is, that the question is not whether the destruction is great, but whether God is not still greater, and therefore whether He is not able even out of the destruction to bring forth better things. It is certain that in the New Testament, the word in question is used of those who though “destroyed” are yet “saved.”

“The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)

[Now, which segment of mankind was lost and in need of salvation? Was it the Baptists? Pentecostals? Methodists? Mormons? Jehovah’s Witnesses? Buddhists? Muslims? Atheists? Agnostics? Don’t the Scriptures declare that “ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God?” Therefore, ALL mankind was in fact LOST and in need of a Savior. And according to Christ, His work on the cross was complete when He triumphantly exclaimed, “It is finished!” Will Christ prove to be an utter failure in His attempt to save that which was lost? – GC]

The New Testament use of the word apollumi proves that it describes, not so much preservation from future or threatened judgment (in which case tereo would be used, as in John 17:15, I Thessalonians 5:23, Jude 1:1, Revelation 3:10, etc.), but rather deliverance out of some present and oppressing evil. So we read (Matthew 9:21,22) “And the woman said within herself, if I may but touch His garment, I shall be made whole,” that is restored to health; “and the woman was made whole,” that is restored to health, “from that hour.” So again (Mark 5:23): “And Jairus besought Him greatly, saying, I pray Thee, lay Thy hands upon her, that she may be healed.” So too (Mark 6:56): “And as many as touched Him were made whole.” So too, in reference to Lazarus (John 11:12): “Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well,” that is, he shall be restored to health (See also Luke 8:36, 18:42; Acts 4:9, James 5:15 etc). See also what is said of our Lord (Hebrews 5:7) that “in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers unto Him that was able to save Him from death” (literally “out of death”), “He was heard in that He feared.” But He was not preserved from death, but delivered out of it. Our salvation, like our Lord’s, for we are His members, is not from death, but by it, and out of it.

[I will close now with a couple of excerpts from J. Preston Eby’s insightful article: The Wages of Sin is Death.]

Here is a fact. The Word says, “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Wherever one goes he finds someone quoting that plain declaration of fact. But the remarkable thing is that no one believes it; not even the ones who continually preach it. The hell-fire-and-brimstone enthusiast loudly proclaims that verse of Scripture to be true, and then abruptly and shamefully contradicts himself by maintaining that the wages of sin is ETERNAL TORMENT! But if eternal torment were the penalty for sin, then Jesus never atoned for sin. He did not suffer eternal torment. And if that is the price that God demands as punishment for sin, then Jesus paid nothing at all. If my punishment were eternal torment, and Jesus took my place, receiving the full judgment for my sin, then it should be clear to any thinking person that He would have had to suffer eternally in hell. That is the only way the debt could be paid!

In like manner, if the wages of sin were utter annihilation, or eternal death, then there is no hope for anyone. For Jesus was not annihilated! He did not stay dead for ever! If annihilation is the penalty for sin, then every son of Adam, saved or lost, must yet suffer his own penalty and be blotted out of existence forevermore. Then Jesus never saved anyone from anything. And then we all might as well enjoy this world to the full; for it is the only life and existence that any of us will ever know!

To the annihilationist the wages of sin is ETERNAL DEATH. But that is not what the Word says! The Bible nowhere speaks of “eternal death.” Oh, that men might begin to read, and to heed what is written! “The wages of sin is death,” says the Lord. And it is true, even though the majority of men [Christians] still think that the wages of sin is eternal torment, one of the most abominable and notorious lies ever told, a product of popish fraud and deception and greed. The wages of sin is actually death. And Jesus died! He met the full demands of law. He paid the debt of sin in full, blessed be His wonderful name!

APOLEIA = PERDITION

PART II

APOLEIA = PERDITION

The English word perdition was derived from the Latin word perdere, meaning “to destroy.” According to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition, the word perdition can either mean: a) utter destruction, b) loss, c) eternal damnation, or d) hell. The New Combined Bible Dictionary and Concordance (Baker Book House, 1961) gives the meaning of this word as either: damnation, loss, or destruction. And Smith’s Bible Dictionary simply renders the word perdition as damnation.

Now get out your dictionary and look up the word damn. You will soon learn that this word was derived from the Latin word damnare, or damnum, which was a legal term meaning a damage, loss, or a fine, and had NOTHING to do with the concept of eternal punishment in hell. Time does indeed change things.

1.      “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.” (John 17:12 – KJV)

The term “son of perdition” in this instance is obviously speaking of Judas Iscariot, who was an eyewitness to the many miraculous works of our Lord, and may have even loved and admired Christ as much as the other disciples. If it had been left up to him, he quite possibly would have remained loyal to Jesus. But there is absolutely no way on God’s green earth that Judas could have chosen of his own “free will” to remain loyal to Christ, for his destiny was already foretold (Psalm 41:9; 109:8). Therefore, he became “lost” in this present wicked age to fulfill God’s plan.

FREE WILL or CAUSE AND EFFECT?

Most scientists today agree with Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, and will attest to the “cause and effect” relationship in the universe. And even those who believe in the “big bang” theory will have to admit that something (or someone) caused that “big bang.” There are no known exceptions to this rule. So the question we must ask ourselves is this: Does mankind really have “free will,” or are all of his thoughts and actions in reality “caused” by outside forces?

“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” (Psalm 139:16)

“A man’s steps are of the Lord; how then can a man understand his own way?” (Proverbs 20:24)

“And whatever His soul desires, that He does. For He performs what is appointed for me.” (Job 23:13-14)

The decisions we all make in our daily lives are in reality caused or influenced by unseen forces. In fact, this false concept that we all have “free will” is undoubtedly the most stubbornly persistent illusion in the world today. According to my dictionary, the term “free will” means

  • voluntary choice or decision < I do this of my own free will >
  • freedom of humans to make choices that are not determined by prior causes or divine intervention

In the case of Judas Iscariot his destiny was foretold in the Scriptures; therefore, an outside force (The LORD!) had to influence his decision making process in order to bring to fruition the ancient prophecies concerning him.

“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition [or instruction], upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” (I Corinthians 10:11)

Therefore, this idea that a loving God would “cause” something to happen (A man’s steps ARE of the LORD) that was beyond Judas’ control (How could he have understood his own way?), and end up torturing him in eternal hellfire because of it is abominable, to say the very least. You may recall that Jesus’ dying plea to His Father was “Father, forgive them, for they know NOT what they do!” Do you believe that our heavenly Father will answer this most heartfelt prayer by His Son? I do!

“And the LORD said, ‘Who will persuade Ahab king of Israel to go up, that he may fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ So one spoke in this manner, and another in that manner. Then a spirit came forward and stood up before the LORD and said, ‘I will persuade him.’ The LORD said to him, ‘In what way?’ So he said, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And the LORD said, ‘You shall persuade him and also prevail; go out and do so. Therefore look! The LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these prophets of yours, and the LORD has declared disaster against you.” (II Chronicles 18:19-22)

Here we have an excellent example, written for our instruction, of how God’s celestial agents influence mankind. A lying spirit persuaded Judas in much the same way that King Ahab was persuaded, and the end result was disaster. And the discerning eye that watches the news today can also see that God put lying spirits upon the mouths of President Bush’s advisors, or “prophets,” encouraging him to go to war in Iraq with statements such as, “They will welcome us as liberators!” Although many of the Iraqi people undoubtedly have welcomed us, a substantial number of insurgents obviously have not, resulting in the quagmire that we are all witnessing today.

“They gathered to do everything that you, by your power and will, had already decided would take place.” (Acts 4:28 – Today’s English Version)

“Known unto God are ALL His works from the beginning of the world.” (Acts 15:18 – KJV)

“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.’” (Isaiah 46:10)

For many years I was led to believe that we have all been given the freedom to either choose Christ or to reject Him, and this “free will choice” of ours would seal our eternal fate. And on top of this, the church also teaches that God already knows beforehand what choice everyone will make. Now please stop and think about this for a moment. If God really has given man free will to choose his own destiny, then there is no way that He could declare the end from the beginning, for He would have to wait and see what choice each individual makes before He could declare the end of things. I’m sorry, but that’s just the way it is. You can’t have it both ways. However, if God already knows ahead of time what “choice” you are going to make with your supposed “free will,” then is this truly a “free will choice,” or is this more correctly defined as “destiny?” I will let our Savior address this:

“For many are called, but few chosen.” (Matthew 20:16; 22:14)

“But for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen…” (Mark 13:20 – KJV)

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you…” (John 15:16 – KJV)

“I have chosen you out of the world…” (John 15:19 – KJV)

According to the Scriptures, everything that happens under the sun is following a prescribed course.

“They gathered to do EVERYTHING that you, by your power and will, had already decided would take place.” (Acts 4:28 – Today’s English Version)

The saga of human history is literally just that – His Story! And like Judas Iscariot, most have been led astray in this present wicked age of deception. But there will come a time when our loving heavenly Father will welcome ALL of His prodigal sons into the kingdom, “for this my son was dead and is alive again, he was lost and is found.” (Luke 15:24)

“When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters return to their former state, then you and your daughters will return to your former state.” (Ezekiel 16:55)

2. “Let the lives you live be worthy of the Good News of the Christ, in order that, whether I come and see you or, being absent, only hear of you, I may know that you are standing fast in one spirit and with one mind, fighting shoulder to shoulder for the faith of the Good News. Never for a moment quail before your antagonists. Your fearlessness will be to them a sure token of impending destruction (perdition), but to you it will be a sure token of your salvation, a token coming from God.” (Philippians 1:27,28 – Richard Weymouth’s New Testament in Modern Speech)

There can be no greater witness for God than the one willing to give his own life for what he believes. The account of Stephen (Acts 6 & 7) provides us with a beautiful example of how one man fearlessly stood for the Truth in the face of violent opposition. Although it cost him his life, he received his assurance of God’s salvation right before his death, forgiving his enemies in the process.

“In most solemn truth I tell you that unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains what it was – a single grain; but that if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. He who holds his life dear, is destroying it; and he who makes his life of no account in this world shall keep it to the Life of the Ages. If a man wishes to be my servant, let him follow me; and where I am, there too shall my servant be. If a man wishes to be my servant, the Father will honour him.” (John 12:24-26 – Weymouth’s New Testament in Modern Speech)

Many of us will never be required to give up our physical lives for Christ in the way that Stephen was, but we ARE required to give up our worldly lives. Jesus said

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.” (Luke 9:23,24)

Defending the real gospel in this age of delusion will not be an easy thing to do, for we will find ourselves at odds with an established religious system that will swiftly label us as brainwashed members of some deranged cult. But we can take comfort in Jesus’ words:

“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:11,12)

It is important to note here that Jesus was never at odds with worldly people; rather, it was the religious authorities, the scribes and the Pharisees, who persecuted Jesus and His followers.

“Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (II Timothy 3:12)

Now what percentage of people who attend the average mega-church in the United States today would you say are actively suffering persecution for their faith? I would be willing to bet that it is less than 1/10th of one percent. This alone should tell us that most who are in the churches are really not concerned with living godly lives; they just want their fire insurance (In fact, I can honestly say that this was my attitude for many years). And on Judgment Day, all of their wrong attitudes and motives shall be  revealed before the assembly (Proverbs 26:26), which will be the proof of their impending ruin, or perdition.

3.      “Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition.” (II Thessalonians 2:3)

Most of fundamental Christianity puts this section of Scripture into an “end times” context, declaring that “the man of sin” or “son of perdition” is speaking of a coming world leader known as the antichrist. Although I will not necessarily disagree that one day this prophecy will indeed be fulfilled in the physical realm, the ones who have been given “eyes to see” will identify with this passage on a very personal level as well.

Many years ago I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior and was baptized in the local church where I was brought up. As I grew older, though, I fell away from my childhood faith when “the cares of the world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desire for other things (Mark 4:19)” came in and darkened my heart. It was here during this life of sin and debauchery that I became aware of my woeful condition. In other words, “the falling away [came] first, and the man of sin [was] revealed! It was then and only then that I was able to see a need for a change, a need to repent.

On the other hand, there are many that will go through this life and never see a need for repentance. Many are brought up in church, accept Jesus at an early age (just like I did), but remain steadfast in their faith. They go to church every Sunday, sing their songs and pay their “tithes and offerings.” In fact, they do many wonderful works in our Lord’s Name. But Jesus clearly stated that

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your Name, cast out demons in Your Name, and done many wonders in Your Name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.” (Matthew 7:21-23)

This group of people will never experience the trials and tribulations during this life which are necessary to truly destroy “the man of sin.” They are NOT being judged now. But when Jesus tells them to “depart from Him,” contrary to fundamentalist doctrine, this is NOT an eternal death sentence; rather, it only means that they have not been found worthy to inherit the blessings of the kingdom during this present age. They are still under the law of sin and death (Please read Romans 8:1-18). For them, there is still a refining process that needs to take place in the lake of fire. But the ones who WILL be found worthy are God’s elect. They ARE being judged now, during this present wicked age, and are the same ones of whom John spoke:

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things that are written therein: for the time is at hand.” (Revelation 1:3 – KJV)

The book of Revelation is written on three levels: past, present, and future. Jesus says

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

And He tells John to

“Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.” (Revelation 1:19)

  • So is the book of Revelation speaking of past events? YES!
  • Is the book of Revelation speaking of future events? YES!
  • Is the book of Revelation speaking of current events? ABSOLUTELY!

If you are being conformed into the image of Christ NOW, then you WILL experience all of the trials and tribulations that are mentioned in this book during your current lifetime. This is why John tells you that you are BLESSED; for you have been chosen to “keep those things that are written therein!” Your time IS at hand!

You will give your heart to Jesus Christ, who sits upon the white horse (Revelation 6:2; 19:11). Then the rider on the fiery red horse will come along and take your peace from you (Revelation 6:4) when the cares of this world resume control of your life. You WILL fall away and leave your first love, just like all of the disciples did when they fled and left Jesus to suffer His fate alone. But no matter what you do in life, you will never find fulfillment (Revelation 6:5,6), and will experience a severe famine in your life as a result (Revelation 6:8).

I know for me, there eventually came a time in my life when I suddenly realized that most everything I had ever believed and taken for granted as being true turned out to be false. It was here when I experienced a great “earthquake,” and (my) sun became darkened, and (my) moon became as blood, and all of (my) stars, (my system of belief), fell from the heavens to the earth (Revelation 6:12). It was at this point when I truly crashed and burned. After several attempts during my lifetime of trying to do what I thought God would have me to do, and always failing, I finally gave up. I wanted nothing more to do with God. Why wouldn’t God finish that good work He had begun in me at such an early age (Philippians 1:6)? Where was the “peace that passes all understanding” (Philippians 4:7) that He had promised? Why did I feel the weight of the world upon my shoulders when Jesus had promised that “[His] yoke [was] easy, and [His] burden [was] light?” (Matthew 11:30) God was apparently a liar, so I reasoned within myself.

“Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory. Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain.” (Revelation 16:8-10)

Yes indeed, I (the beast) had reassumed my position upon the throne of my life (or so I thought).

“Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God [WE are the temple of God (I Corinthians 3:16,17), NOT some ungodly structure in Israel], showing himself that he is God.” (II Thessalonians 2:4)

And my “kingdom” (life) became filled with darkness as a result. I became convinced that this life was a cruel hoax, and that God was the ultimate hypocrite. Why would a loving God make the way of life so narrow that only a few would ever find it, and end up burning all others in hell for all eternity? I finally became convinced that there   was no way I could ever walk the “straight and narrow,” and if He wanted to burn me in hell for all eternity, then there was nothing I could do about it anyway. Besides, I had come to the conclusion that any so-called “god” who would do that to his children didn’t deserve MY affection, neither the time of day.

“They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.” (Revelation 16:11)

It was when I was perhaps at the lowest point of my life that the Unveiling, or the Revelation of Jesus Christ, finally took place in my life. And it came at a time when I least expected it!

“Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not!” (Luke 12:40 – KJV)

“Behold, I am coming as a thief! Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” (Revelation 16:15)

Yes, Jesus Christ came as a thief and stole my heart, and I haven’t looked back since! In an instant, that heavy burden was lifted; I have now ceased from my own labors (Hebrews 4:9,10), and have begun to do those good works of Him which were prepared for me from the foundation of the world (Ephesians 2:10). I have now begun to build upon the sure foundation of the True Rock, which is Christ.

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and DOES THEM, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the Rock [Jesus is ‘THE Rock’]. And the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house [yes, it is through MUCH tribulation that we enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, Acts 14:22]; and it did not fall, for it was founded on The Rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine and does not do them, will be like  a foolish man [yes, there are ‘foolish saints’] who built his house on the sand. And the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and IT FELL. And GREAT was its fall.” (Matt. 7:24-27)

For a number of years, whenever I would begin to “build” my spiritual house, it would always come crashing down, no matter how hard I tried. This is now evidence to me that my faith had no sure foundation; rather, it was founded upon lies. Since then, I have come to the knowledge that Jesus Christ is the Savior of ALL men, and that He will indeed SAVE all men. This is the SURE foundation of God’s Truth that I had been searching for my entire life. May it stand the test of time!

4. “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.” (I Timothy 6:9)

Here we have two different words that very closely resemble one another in meaning being used in conjunction with one another. It would probably take an etymologist that has been trained in the ancient Greek language (which I am not) to decipher the exact differences between these two words.

The word that has been rendered by the English word destruction is the Greek word olethros (Strong’s G#3639), and is used a total of four times in the New Testament (See also I Corinthians 5:5; I Thessalonians 5:3; II Thessalonians 1:9). According to Strong’s, olethros means to destroy, ruin, death, punishment. My pocket lexicon says that this word means ruin, doom, or destruction. And Young’s simply renders the meaning as destruction. Vine’s Concise Dictionary of Bible Words says that this word

“… is used in I Cor. 5:5, of the effect upon the physical condition of an erring believer for the purpose of his spiritual profit; in I Thess. 5:3 and II Thess. 1:9, of the effect of the divine judgments upon men at the ushering in of the Day of the Lord and the revelation of the Lord Jesus; in I Tim. 6:9, of the consequences of the indulgence of the flesh, referring to physical “ruin” and possibly that of the whole being, the following word apoleia stressing the final, eternal and irrevocable character of the ruin.”

It must be remembered that modern resource books such as Strong’s and Vine’s have all been written with “the leaven of the Pharisees” from an “eternal torment in hell” viewpoint. That being said, however, the explanation that Vine’s gives us may offer some helpful insight. Those who see this life’s journey as God’s wholesome discipline to prepare us for eternity understand that “the consequences of the indulgence of the flesh” will turn out to be “the proof of our perdition,” the word apoleia “stressing the final, eternal and irrevocable character of [that] ruin.” The old man, or the “first Adam” must die and be replaced by one that is fit to enter the kingdom of God (Please read I Corinthians 15:35-57).

5. “Now the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him. But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.” (Hebrews 10:38,39)

Contrary to the popular “once saved always saved” teaching in many denominations, this passage provides a stern reminder that we can draw back to perdition, or ruin. The apostle Paul knew that he had to “press forward” and “endure to the end” in order to attain to the resurrection of life (which is separate, or apart from) the resurrection of the dead (Philippians 3). Jesus tells us in Luke 9:62 that “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

It is important to understand that Jesus came to this earth for two main purposes. First of all, He came to die for the sins of the WHOLE world, and accomplished that purpose when He triumphantly declared from the cross, “It is finished!” (John 19:30) ALL men (Yes, this includes women, too!) have been redeemed by Christ’s precious blood, and will eventually be brought back to a right relationship with their Creator (I Corinthians 15:20-28; Colossians 1:19,20; Revelation 21:3,4; etc). Secondly, He came to call out a special people for His Name; His elect, His chosen, His Bride, who will rule and reign with Him. There can be no greater calling.

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (I Peter 2:9)

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to ALL men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age; looking for that blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” (Titus 2:11-14)

Jesus’ words were primarily spoken to anyone “having an ear to hear,” knowing that His sheep would hear His voice.” That is why every letter that is addressed to the seven churches in Revelation 2 & 3 ends with the statement “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Do you have ears to hear?

6. “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the Day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” (II Peter 3:7)

It has already shown that the word “fire” is used all throughout the Scriptures as a symbol for the refining process that will be used to purify ungodly men, as well as the rest of creation.

“For by fire and by His sword the LORD will judge all flesh; and the slain of the LORD shall be many.” (Isaiah 66:16)

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem as a rejoicing, and her people a joy. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in My people; the voice of weeping shall no longer be heard in her, nor the voice of crying.” (Isaiah 65:17-19)

It is obvious that these prophecies are yet to be fulfilled, for there is still much heartache in Israel today. Those who look at the return of the Jews to their homeland as the fulfillment of these ancient prophecies are only seeing the “shadow” of greater promises. Contrary to what much of Christianity teaches, especially on what is called Christian television, the physical seed of Abraham ARE NOT the rightful heirs of God’s promises.

“And IF you are Christ’s, THEN you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:29)

In Israel today we have what is predominately a secular society that is still in unbelief! So how is it that these people have been called “heirs of God’s promises?” God is no respecter of persons; He does not judge men according to their nationality. The true (spiritual) seed of Abraham are those who belong to Christ, His elect. It is they who are the rightful heirs of the blessings of the kingdom of God!

7. “The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.” (Revelation 17:8)

8. “The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition.” (Revelation 17:11)

The 17th and 18th chapters of Revelation describe “the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters” (Revelation 17:1). At the conclusion of God’s judgment, in Revelation 19, we are given a vision of a great multitude in heaven praising God:

“For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.” (Revelation 19:2)

The entire book of Revelation is written in symbolic language. The very first verse tells us that God “sent and signified (by signs and symbols) it by His angel (literally: messenger) to His servant John. That being said, we should now be able to determine the identity of this “great harlot” that is spoken of in Revelation 17 & 18 by searching the Scriptures for the meanings of these symbols. The following passage provides us with a clue:

“The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of the bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore.” (Revelation 18:23)

Jesus IS the light of the world (John 8:12, 9:5, 12:35, etc.), as well as the light of His Holy Spirit that is in men as a testimony to others (Matthew 5:14-16). A lamp is symbolic of something (or someone) that gives this light. The body of Christ, or the church, has been commissioned to be the giver of this light (Matthew 28:19,20) to the world. And Jesus identifies Himself as the bridegroom (See Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19,20; or Luke 5:34,35) who comes to earth seeking a bride.

According to Jewish wedding tradition, after the bride has accepted the invitation of the bridegroom to be married, he goes back to his father’s house to prepare a bridal chamber in which to consummate the marriage. Jesus is away right now preparing that place for us (John 14:1-3). While the bridegroom is away, it is the responsibility of the bride to be ready, for at a moment’s notice her bridegroom may come and steal her away like a thief, usually in the middle of the night. In ancient Israel, they didn’t have streetlights and paved roads, so she had to keep her lamp lit, and make sure she had plenty of oil for what may be a long journey to her bridegroom’s estate.

If you will recall the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), however, not all who were called to be a part of the bride of Christ were ready when the time came. The story tells us that some ran out of oil, and therefore their lights went out. It can be awfully difficult at times to find someone at night without a light to show the way. Hence when the Bridegroom cometh, may He find your lamp burning bright with the Holy Spirit of Truth; otherwise, He will not recognize you! (Matthew 25:12)

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23,24)

The marriage between Christ and His chosen bride, all of those who DO worship God in spirit and in truth, is consummated:

“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife [No longer a bride, but a WIFE!] has made herself ready. And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.” (Revelation 19:7,8)

Here we are told that the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints, who have “been found in Him, not having their own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith” (Philippians 3:9).

By applying the principle of comparing spiritual things with spiritual (I Corinthians 2:13), I am reminded here of the parable of the wedding feast in Matthew 22, where one man is apparently mistaken for one of the invited guests, but was later found standing there without the proper attire. Now compare the state of that man with the condition of those who are of the Church at Laodicea:

“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ – and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.” (Revelation 3:17)

In the parable of the wedding feast, the “man” is apparently a symbol for the harlot, one who thought she was rich and in need of nothing. She obviously thought that she was “saved,” and therefore had earned her invitation to this great feast. But in God’s eyes she was wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked! Please take note of what happens to this “man.”

“Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:13,14)

“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” (Revelation 3:15,16)

“For she did not know that I gave her grain, new wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold – which they prepared for Baal. Therefore I will return and take away My grain in its time [Mark 4:29; Revelation 14:14-16], and My new wine in its season, and take back My wool and My linen, given to cover her nakedness. Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one shall deliver her from My hand.” (Hosea 2:8-10)

“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved!” (Jeremiah 8:20)

We have already learned that the “linen” is the righteous acts of the saints. The “wool” (From what animal do we get wool?) is symbolic of our sin covering which is provided by none other than the Lamb of God Himself, Jesus Christ! Her “covering” will be removed and her nakedness will be revealed in the sight of her lovers.

“The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of her burning, standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come. The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of the bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived.” (Revelation 18:9,10,17)

The word polis (Strong’s #G4172), which comprises one-half of our modern word metropolis, is used here to describe this mighty city. A Pocket Lexicon to the Greek New Testament says that “this word is used rather of the citizens than of the locality (Matthew 8:34, 12:25; Mark 1:33),” in much the same way that the word church more accurately defines the people rather than the place of worship.

“How the faithful city [people] has become a harlot! It was full of justice; righteousness lodged in it, but now murderers.” (Isaiah 1:21)

“You built your high places (literally: places for pagan worship) at the head of every road (there is a church building on every corner), and made your beauty to be abhorred (The nations blaspheme God because of them – Romans 2:24). You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, (all are welcome) and multiplied your acts of harlotry.” (Ezekiel 16:25)

A harlot is defined as “a prostitute or an unprincipled or immoral woman,” according to my dictionary. The Hebrew word for “harlot” is zanah (Strong’s H#2181), and is used in a figurative sense to describe the act of committing spiritual fornication, or idolatry. In other words, all of those who are NOT worshipping God in spirit and in truth are in reality harlots, for God IS Spirit, and Jesus IS the Truth! Those who are teaching doctrines of demons and commandments of men, either knowingly or unknowingly, are harlots. And all of those who are caught up in this false system of worship are in reality idolaters and are committing spiritual fornication, whether they know it or not.

I know that this information is disturbing to say the very least. I am also well aware of the fact that the majority of those who read this material for the first time will recoil in disgust. Most will get very defensive and say, “Why there is NO WAY that this can possibly be true!” In most cases, human pride will not allow room for repentance.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge — even to ourselves — that we’ve been so credulous (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles rise). Finding the occasional straw of truth awash in a great ocean of confusion and bamboozle requires intelligence, vigilance, dedication and courage.” –  Carl Sagan

In the article “Hell: Biblical Truth or Pagan Myth?” it was clearly shown that the doctrine of eternal torment was of pagan origins, and that it has been used by the powers that be to control people via fear and superstition. [For a more in-depth study be sure to read The Origin and History of the Doctrine of Endless Punishment, by Thomas B. Thayer, D.D.] Most churches these days, especially the huge mega-churches, no longer spend much time openly teaching about hell, for they don’t want to frighten away their members. Many instead concentrate on promoting family values and financial well being. But the doctrine of eternal punishment has so permeated today’s society that it no longer needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Most are already very cognizant of it. The “leaven of the Pharisees” has indeed worked its way through “the whole batch of dough.”

As good stewards of God’s Word, we are all required to be diligent with our assets (Matthew 5:14-16; 25:14-30; Luke 12:42-48; etc). If you belong to an organized church, then it would be prudent of you to find out exactly what it is that they believe in regards to eternal punishment. Most all churches have a “statement of faith” that can be made available to you upon request.

If the Spirit has been inwardly bearing witness to you that the material you have been reading on this site is true, then you are expected to share these truths with others, especially with those who are of the household of faith. A word of warning: those who are (especially) in leadership positions within the religious establishment will most likely not listen to you, for they have the most to lose: their lofty position, their salary, etc. But you are still required to warn them to turn from their wicked ways (Ezekiel 3:17-21) and repent of teaching these doctrines of demons. Those of us who worship the True God can attest to the fact that God has not given us a spirit of fear, for His perfect Love has cast out this “fear” which has been taught not by God, but by the commandments of men.

Finally, and this is the most important point that I wish to make. Don’t take my word for any of this; be like the Bereans (Acts 17:10,11) and do your own research in order to “prove all things” (I Thessalonians 5:21).

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Timothy 2:15 – KJV)

I pray that you will have no need to be ashamed on that Day! And if you should decide to take the time to study these things, and if you are able to confirm them as being true, then it would be prudent of you to

“Come out of her [the harlot church], my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.” (Revelation 18:4)

And attempt to find fellowship with a group of believers that do not believe in or teach these pagan myths, which, in this day and age can often prove to be difficult.

“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

‘I will dwell with them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.’ Therefore ‘Come out from among them and be separate, says the LORD. Do not tough what is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters,’ says the LORD almighty.” (II Corinthians 6:14-18)

OTHER EXAMPLES

(Proving that apoleia <perdition> cannot mean eternal damnation)

Matthew 26:8

“But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, ‘Why this waste?’”

Mark 14:4

“But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, ‘Why was this fragrant oil wasted?’”

In the story of the woman who used the expensive oil to anoint Jesus’ feet shortly before his crucifixion, we will note that his disciples objected to what they considered a waste (or loss) of money. Can money or expensive perfume be damned to hell?

Acts 8:20

“But Peter said to him, ‘Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!”

In this story we are told that Simon the sorcerer’s money would perish with him. Does this mean that his money will also be suffering in the flames of hell?

Acts 25:16

“It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have license to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.”  (KJV)

Although the Roman government indeed had the authority to deliver a man unto physical death, they in no way possessed the authority to deliver a man unto eternal damnation.

Comments/Questions?

Part 1 | Part 3

JUST WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THE WORD DESTRUCTION?

JUST WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THE WORD DESTRUCTION?

The word destruction can be found in the Authorized Version, or the King James Bible, a total of 94 times; 82 times in the Old Testament alone. According to Young’s Analytical Concordance to the Bible, this sole English word is used to represent 32 different Hebrew words! It is not my intention to produce a tome on this subject, so I will briefly list some of the meanings of these different Hebrew words.

  • To be lost
  • Destruction
  • Vapor, calamity
  • Contrition
  • Ruin, breaking, throwing down
  • Waste, drought
  • Misfortune
  • Trouble
  • Downfall
  • Desolation
  • Marring
  • Cutting off
  • Rapid moving
  • Breaking, breach
  • Spoiling
  • Vanity, falsehood
  • Corruption, pit
  • A treading down
  • A wearing out
  • Passing on, change

I hate to have to burst anyone’s bubble (not really), especially all of you “King James Only” advocates out there, but the main point I wish to make here is that, contrary to popular belief, there can be no such thing as a “perfect translation” from one language to another. Despite the best of intentions of any translator, there will inevitably be something that gets lost in the translation. Any etymologist can assure you that this is indeed the case. Otherwise, there is no way you would ever use just one English word to represent 32 different Hebrew words, all of which have slightly different meanings! That being said, and since there are only twelve New Testament examples of the word destruction being used, it is here where I would like to focus our attention.

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13,14 – NKJV)

The assertion was made in the article “Hell: Biblical Truth or Pagan Myth?” that the word used here to describe destruction, the Greek word apoleia, can never in its original sense imply “eternal damnation.” The purpose of this study is to hopefully leave no doubt to the reader that this is indeed the case.

STUDY TO SHEW THYSELF APPROVED

For the serious student of God’s Word, an invaluable tool of study to have at your disposal is The Englishman’s Greek Concordance of the New Testament, as well as The Englishman’s Hebrew Concordance of the Old Testament, by George V. Wigram. These volumes will show you every instance that a certain Greek or Hebrew word is used, verse by verse. By studying in this manner, the Holy Spirit can really open up the original meanings of these words for you.

The word apoleia is used a total of 20 times in the Greek New Testament. In the Authorized Version (King James Bible) it has been rendered by the English word perdition 8 times, destruction 6 times, damnable 2 times, waste 2 times, and by the words die and pernicious ways once each. A Pocket Lexicon to the Greek New Testament, first published by Oxford University Press in 1916, renders this word to mean destruction, ruin, or loss. According to Young’s Analytical Concordance to the Bible, the word apoleia simply means loss. Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance tells us that the word apoleia (G#684) means ruin or loss (physical, spiritual, or eternal): — damnable (-nation), destruction, die, perdition, x perish, pernicious ways, waste.

Now please take note of how closely the various meanings of this word in Strong’s Concordance matches the Authorized Version’s renderings; in fact, they are nearly identical! The fact that the KJV was completed 2 centuries before James Strong was even born leads me to believe that the AV translators were more the authority in determining, at least in this instance, the meaning of the Greek. Now in all fairness to Mr. Strong, I must say that I have never seen an earlier edition concordance in his name, and it is quite possible, even probable that the leaven grew as time passed.

It is also of the utmost importance to note here that many key words in Bibles such as the KJV do not convey the meaning they had when they were written and therefore do not convey the meaning of the original Greek and Hebrew. A thorough study of the etymology of the word damn will show that this word no longer conveys the meaning it once had. In sixteen century England it was a legal term simply meaning loss, which would be consistent with the meaning of apoleia, and did not contain the theological overtone we associate with the word today, due in no small part to the religious influence of the church. It is undoubtedly errors such as these, which apparently have come about as a result of a failure of many to “study to show themselves approved” that have contributed to the rise of many of our abhorrent modern translations. The following excerpt is taken from an American Bible Society edition entitled Good News for Modern Man/The New Testament in Today’s English Version.

“Go in through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to hell, and there are many who travel it. The gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and few people find it.” (Matthew 7:13,14)

According to this version, MANY are traveling the wide road that leads to hell, and they dare to call this “Good News for Modern Man?” Contrary to the fundamentalist’s concept of the word hell, it can easily be proven that this word, like the word damn, no longer conveys the meaning it once had as well. If you look in your dictionary for the word hell you will discover that it was derived from the Old High German word helan, which means to conceal. The AV translators probably used the word hell to describe the place of concealment following death, which in 17th century England would not have been inconsistent with both the Hebrew word Sheol as well as the Greek word Hades. Smith’s Bible Dictionary tells us

“It is clear that in many passages of the Old Testament Sheol can only mean “the grave,” and is so rendered in the A.V. (see, for example, Genesis 37:35, 42:38; I Samuel 2:6; Job 14:13). In other passages, however, it seems to involve a notion of punishment, and is therefore rendered in the A.V. by the word “Hell.” But in many cases this translation misleads the reader. It is obvious, for instance, that Job 11:8; Psalm 139:8; Amos 9:2 (where “hell” is used as the antithesis of “heaven”), merely illustrate the Jewish notions of the locality of Sheol, in the bowels of the earth. In the New Testament the word Hades, like Sheol, sometimes means merely “the grave” (Revelation 20:13; Acts 2:31; I Corinthians 15:55), or in general “the unseen world.” It is in this sense that the creeds say of our Lord, “He went down into hell,” meaning the state of the dead in general, without any restriction of happiness or misery – a doctrine certainly, though only virtually, expressed in Scripture (Ephesians 4:9; Acts 2:25-31).

PART I

APOLEIA = DESTRUCTION

So let us begin our study with the word in question, apoleia. Unless otherwise noted, all passages will be taken from the New King James Version. Besides the example from Matthew 7:13, which was already examined in the article “Hell: Biblical Truth or Pagan Myth?” this word has been rendered as destruction four more times.

  1. 1. “But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor? What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory, even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?” (Romans 9:20-24)

In this passage we can clearly see that God, from the foundation of the world, has prepared both vessels of wrath as well as vessels of mercy. This idea that our loving heavenly Father would create souls in advance for the purpose of endlessly torturing them in literal hellfire is abominable to say the least. The word wrath comes from the Greek word orge (Strong’s G#3709), and means to show anger, wrath, passion, and in this verse has a definite eschatological reference of the divine wrath. As the sovereign Lord over His creation, God has a large purpose that will eventually bring about blessing to all. But in the process of its fulfillment He has chosen to use some (the vessels of wrath) as foils to set forth His indignation and power, that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy.

“For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, ‘For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My Name may be declared in all the earth.’ Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens.” (Romans 9:17,18)

Go back and read the Exodus story again. I will challenge anyone to show me where man’s “free will” comes into play here. Pharaoh did not at any time of his own free volition just decide to change his mind about releasing God’s people. Quite to the contrary, it was God who hardened Pharaoh’s heart over and over again in order to show His power and to accomplish His purposes.

Concerning the vessels of mercy, Paul writes:

“But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth; to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (II Thessalonians 2:13,14)

The word for chosen (KJV) is the Greek word haireomai (Strong’s G#138), which means to take for oneself, prefer. In John’s gospel Jesus says that

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you…” (John 15:16)

Do you see anything here resembling man’s free will, and his ability to choose Christ?

“So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.” (Romans 9:16)

The ones upon whom God has showed mercy are not appointed to wrath (see I Thessalonians 5:4-11).

“Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:13 – KJV)

These are the elect of God; they will pass through the fire (Daniel 3:25), but not be hurt by it (Revelation 2:11).

“For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.” (I Corinthians 11:31 – KJV)

“And whosoever shall fall on this stone [judge himself NOW while in the flesh] shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall [in the lake of fire, at the white throne judgment], it will grind him to powder.” (Matthew 21:44 – KJV)

“But when we are [now] judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned [to the great white throne judgment] with the world.” (I Corinthians 11:32 – KJV)

But all of the multitudes that will walk the wide road into the kingdom via destruction do have an appointment with God’s wrath. The wood, hay, and stubble shall be consumed, but they ALL WILL BE SAVED (I Corinthians 3:15)!

  1. 2. “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame – who set their mind on earthly things.” (Philippians 3:18,19)
  1. E. Knoch, in his Concordant Commentary on the New Testament, writes:

“The enemies of the cross of Christ are those who, failing to apprehend the significance of His shameful death, still cling to the terrestrial and the physical. The cross of Christ brings before us the manner of His death. It was an ignominious, shameful, malefactor’s death, to which God’s curse was attached. Hence we may avail ourselves of the efficacy of His blood, and yet, by clinging to the world and the flesh, become enemies of His cross.” [And therefore may run the risk of not qualifying for the first resurrection – GC]

And according to this passage in Philippians, their end will be destruction, which means that they will suffer loss, or ruin, but absolutely cannot mean that they will suffer eternal hellfire. How can I be so sure, you might ask? Well, let’s look to the words of Jesus for some insight into how God treats His enemies.

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do so? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? (Matthew 5:44-47)

So here we have a set of instructions from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on what He expects from us concerning our behavior toward others, including our enemies. Now would God expect something from us that He would be unwilling to do Himself?

“Therefore you shall be perfect, JUST AS YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN IS PERFECT!” (Matthew 5:48emphasis added)

Make no mistake about it; ALL enemies of the cross of Christ WILL BE DESTROYED! This does not mean that the man himself will be destroyed; rather it is the attitude of that man which made him an enemy of the cross of Christ in the first place that will be consumed.

“If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you.” (Proverbs 25:21,22)

It is probable that this passage of Scripture is also describing the method by which God will implement His fiery, tormenting judgment upon all that are called “enemies of the cross of Christ.” Repaying evil with goodness, love and mercy will be the “fire” that shall melt the many hearts of stone and consume all that separates the sinner from his Creator. In the end will come salvation, for EVERY knee shall bow, and EVERY tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father!

  1. 3. “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be   false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.” (II Peter 2:1)

Before I attempt to drive home a point concerning this text, it is necessary to provide some background. In the book of Genesis, God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26). And the very next verse tells us that God completed this process when it says: “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). According to the teaching of fundamental Christianity, man was in perfect union with God until sin entered into the world via the serpent’s deception (Genesis 3). However, there is one big problem with this viewpoint; namely, if man was so “perfect,” then what made him susceptible to sin and deception in the first place? Anyone who really takes the time to search the Scriptures will come to see that Eve, especially, was guilty of sin before she ever partook of the forbidden fruit.

“For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.” (I John 2:16)

Now compare the above verse with the thoughts that were going through Eve’s mind right before she and her husband Adam ate of the fruit:

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food (the lust of the flesh), that it was pleasant to the eyes (the lust of the eyes), and a tree desirable to make one wise (the pride of life), she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.” (Genesis 3:6)

Now let’s go back to John and we will gain further insight:

“Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (I John 2:15)

Did you catch that? If ANYONE loves the world, THE LOVE OF THE FATHER IS NOT IN HIM! So how could Adam and Eve have been in perfect union with God, when the Scriptures clearly tell us that, according to their thoughts, they were not?

In order to understand this, we need to go back to the statement where it says “God created (past tense) man in His image.” A more accurate rendering of this verse is provided by the Concordant Version of the Old Testament:

“And creating (present tense) is [God] humanity in His image. In the image of [God] He creates it. Male and female He creates them.” (Genesis 1:27)

God has a plan and a purpose for the human race. God is creating (present tense – indicating an ongoing activity) man in His own image. And an integral part of that process is to provide mankind with an experience of both good and evil.

“Then the Lord God said, ‘Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil.’” (Genesis 3:22)

* Theodore of Mopsuestia (350-428 A.D.), who was just one of a significant number of the early church fathers who taught the eventual salvation of all, provides further insight:

“God knew that men would sin in all ways, but permitted this result to come to pass, knowing that it would ultimately be for their advantage. For since God created man when he did not exist, and made him ruler of so extended a system, and offered so great blessings for his enjoyment, it was impossible that He should have not prevented the entrance of sin if He had not known that it would be ultimately for his advantage. Therefore God divided the creation into two states, the present and the future. In the latter He will bring all to immortality and immutability. In the former He gives us over to death and mutability. For if He had made us at first immortal and immutable, we should not have differed from irrational animals, who do not understand the peculiar characteristics by which they are distinguished. For if we had been ignorant of mutability we could not have understood the good of immutability. Ignorant of death, we could not have known the true worth of immortality. Ignorant of corruption, we could not have properly valued incorruption. Ignorant of the burden of sinful passions, we could not have duly exulted in freedom from such passions. In a word, ignorant of an experiment of evils, we should not have been able properly to understand the opposite forms of good.” (Chapter XXV, History of Opinions on the Scriptural Doctrine of Retribution, by Edward Beecher, D.D.)

Fundamental Christianity teaches us that Satan was originally created as the archangel Lucifer, and that at one time he also was in perfect union with God, but because of his pride and rebellion he fell from grace and became the devil. He then convinced one third of God’s angels to join him in this celestial mutiny, which would eventually lead to the corruption of the human race. There is one big problem with this viewpoint, namely, that it contradicts the Scriptures:

“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” (John 8:44)

“He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning.” (I John 3:8)

This idea that Satan was once in perfect union with God contradicts a clear declaration of our Lord Jesus, for He declared that the devil was a liar and a murderer from the beginning!

“By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.” (Job 26:13 – KJV)

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

Now didn’t we just learn that God made everything, including the devil, and that everything He made was very good?

“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.” (Isaiah 45:7 – KJV)

So we can clearly see that the evil which God has created is serving a large purpose during this present wicked age which will eventually turn out for good! On the contrary, the church would have us all believe that when sin entered into the world, God temporarily lost control of His creation to Satan and was therefore compelled to send a Savior in order to dig mankind out of the mess into which he had fallen. But don’t the Scriptures declare that the Lamb of whom they speak was “slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8)?” In other words, God had a plan from the beginning of creation, the integral part of that plan being the offering up of His only begotten Son. It makes much more sense to believe that God is in control, that He is sovereign, that He had a plan from the foundation of the world, and that everything is going according to plan.

Now let us return to II Peter 2:1. In this passage we have the word apoleia being used twice. Here I want to focus on the first instance, which the KJV renders as “damnable heresies.” According to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition, the word damnable means liable to or deserving condemnation, very bad, detestable. The word liable implies a possibility or probability of incurring something because of position, nature, or a particular situation. This present wicked age is being used as the vehicle to make all of God’s creation liable to their Creator. Concerning the teachings of Theodore of Mopsuestia, A Dictionary of Christian Biography tells us that

“Man was created in the former state, his nature being from the first liable to dissolution… The fall therefore did not introduce mortality, but converted the liability into a fact… As our mortality was no afterthought with God, so neither was the sentence of death a vindictive punishment. The present life, with its vicissitudes and probationary trials, is a wholesome discipline, affording room for the exercise of free will and the attainment of goodness, which without our efforts would be destitute of moral worth. Although human nature is free, yet in its present condition of mortality and mutability it is insufficient to conquer the forces of evil without supernatural aid. A new creation is needed to abolish sin and death.

The Day is coming when the “beast” (the old man) and the “false prophet” (all false religious systems) will be destroyed! All will eventually come to the knowledge of the Truth (I Timothy 2:4). Those who are teaching damnable heresies in the Name of our Lord and Savior are being made liable to their Creator, swift destruction (loss; ruin) will come upon them, and they WILL repent and give glory to God!

“But beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the LORD one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years is as one day. The LORD is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that ALL come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:8,9)

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” (II Corinthians 4:16)

  1. 4. “Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation – as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.” (II Peter 3:14-16)

According to Peter, untaught and unstable people will inevitably twist the Scriptures to their own destruction. Now allow the Word of God to enlighten you as to exactly what it means to be “taught” concerning the things of the Spirit. You may be in for a bit of a surprise!

In Acts 3 we are given the account of Peter and John healing the lame man at the gate of the temple, which caused the people who had witnessed it to glorify God. But when they started to preach in the temple the Name of Jesus and the resurrection of the dead, this did not bode well with the Sadducees, due to the fact that they did not believe in any doctrine of a resurrection. The next day they were brought before the rulers, elders and scribes, as well as the high priest.

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13 – KJV)

The word for unlearned is the Greek word agrammatos (Strong’s G#62), and means unlettered or illiterate; while the word for ignorant is the Greek word idiotes (Strong’s G#2399), obviously from which we derive our modern English word idiot. So here we have, according to the most literal rendering of the Greek language, a couple of “illiterate idiots” standing up to the most learned men in all the land and speaking in a Spirit and with an eloquence that made them all marvel. God does indeed choose the foolish things of this world to confound the wise (I Corinthians 1:27). And since God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (literally: for the ages), He still chooses the foolishness of this world to confound the wise!

So what does the Spirit intend to show us from this account? There is obviously a very important place for learning and study, and I do not in any way desire to minimize the importance of it. But God’s ultimate Truth can only come to us via divine revelation. In Matthew’s gospel we are given the following account as an example:

“When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, ‘Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?’ So they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered and said to him, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.’” (Matthew 16:13-17)

So the knowledge of Christ’s divine nature did not come to Peter from any human source, but from above. God chooses to reveal the Truth to those whom He will for His purposes. And Peter later speaks of this elect calling in his epistle:

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.” (I Peter 2:9,10)

Once again, we see that God has from the beginning taken for Himself His special people, upon whom for His reasons He chooses to have mercy. And unless you have been granted the Spiritual eyes to see and ears to hear God’s Truth, you will ever be like the former group to which Peter refers:

“They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.” (I Peter 2:8)

I am sure that many of the scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees of Jesus’ day were fine, upstanding people with nothing but the best of intentions. Many were undoubtedly very dedicated in their zeal to serve God, and spent a lifetime studying the Scriptures. Saul of Tarsus was one of the most learned men in all the land, zealous to serve God, and blameless under the law (Philippians 3:3-6). But after our Lord met him on the road to Damascus and immersed him in the True Light of His Spirit, all that he had before learned he now considered as “dung.” I spent years studying eschatology and reading what the most educated and knowledgeable men of our day had to say on the subject, and for a period of time really thought that I knew something. Turns out that I really didn’t know much of anything, and like the apostle Paul, I now consider the majority of what I had learned before as worthless. True discernment of the Scriptures comes from above, and no amount of personal study can ever take its place. Unless God has chosen to reveal unto you the things of the Spirit, then you will inevitably twist the Scriptures to your own destruction, despite your good intentions.

“Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?” (Luke 6:39)

And just as it was in the past, so it also is in our day (Ecclesiastes 1:9-11). We have in place a whole religious infrastructure that is by the millions leading people to their destruction (ruin). How can I be so sure, you might ask? I will let the Scriptures be the authority concerning this matter.

“Now I plead with you, brethren, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” (I Corinthians 1:10)

Now, do we have an undivided Christian church that is “perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment?” Of course we don’t; instead, there are hundreds, if not thousands of different denominations and “cults” all claiming to have the real truth! But God’s Word is emphatic in telling us that

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” (Ephesians 4:4-6)

According to the Scriptures, there is but ONE true faith and ONE true body of believers! IF this is true, and I believe that it is, then it would probably be safe to assume that the rest are impostors.

“For among My people are found wicked men; they lie in wait as one who sets snares; they set a trap; they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit. Therefore they have become great and grown rich.” (Jeremiah 5:26,27)

We can read in Matthew 23 the account of Jesus pronouncing judgment upon the scribes and Pharisees of His day. And since Ecclesiastes 1 tells us that history will always repeat itself, that there is nothing new under the sun, then Jesus’ words are still applicable. Read Matthew 23 in light of what is happening in the church today, especially on what is called Christian television. Tune in to TBN just about any time of the night or day, and I will guarantee that within 5 or 10 minutes you will see some slick, smooth talker either trying to sell you something or attempting to manipulate your emotions in order to extort money from you.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.” (Matthew 23:14)

Once again we have further confirmation that Judgment Day will be “more tolerable” for worldly people than it will be for all of the religious leaders who are leading the multitudes astray. According to Jesus, they are the ones who will receive the greater condemnation.

“They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.” (II Peter 2:15)

“The story of Balaam (Numbers 22-25) shows the fearful lengths to which men will go for reward, even in the face of divine displeasure. They are lower than brute beasts in their rejection of God’s revealed will, if it leads to preferment or pecuniary [monetary] advantage.” – A. E. Knoch; Concordant Commentary on the New Testament

Now, do you still think anything has changed?

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.” (I Timothy 4:1,2)

The ultimate “doctrine of demons” that has infested the church and is now spreading worldwide thanks to Christian missionaries is this idea that unless you pray some “sinner’s prayer,” get baptized and speak in tongues, our loving heavenly Father will end up torturing you in literal hellfire for ever and ever and ever and ever…

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much the son of hell (Gehenna) as yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15)

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven [referring to the way of life via the first resurrection] against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.” (Matthew 23:13)

Now do you still really truly believe that things have changed for the better? If so, then chances are very good that you have not been given the “eyes that see and the ears that hear” the Truth in this present wicked age. But don’t worry,

“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who will have ALL men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave Himself a ransom for ALL, to be testified in due time.” (I Timothy 2:3-6 – KJV – emphasis added)

In due time, ALL WILL come to the knowledge of the Truth! May God’s Name be praised forever!

* ENDNOTE: Theodorus of Mopsuestia, as well as Origen and a host of many other early church fathers, believed in the eventual salvation of all mankind (I Corinthians 15:20-28). It is important to note here that this was the prevailing belief of most of early Christianity during the first five centuries. It wasn’t until the middle of the sixth century that this doctrine was officially declared anathema, that coming via imperial decree from the Emperor Justinian. This declaration would give birth to the dark ages where the church was to be used as the vehicle to suppress the truth to give the empire firm social, political and economic control of its citizens. THE DAVINCI CODE-BREAKING HYPOCRITES

THE DAVINCI CODE-BREAKING HYPOCRITES

On a big sign in front of a church where I had visited several months ago read the words “Cracking the Koran,” which was a two-part series exposing the evils of Islam. Ever since the “supposed” attack by radical Islamic fundamentalists on September 11, 2001, this has been the hot topic among the conservative Christian community.

Now the Evangelical Christian community is currently up at arms with the recent release of Ron Howard’s new blockbuster movie The DaVinci Code. The Christian marketplace is being saturated with books, tracts, DVD’s, and other materials which expose this heresy. In my own community, churches are organizing workshops in order to inform their parishioners how to witness to all of those poor “lost souls” who may otherwise be taken in by this deception.

Of course, this is nothing new. Approximately 2o years ago, another blasphemous movie, The Last Temptation of Christ, was met with similar types of opposition. Back then, church groups banded together and formed picket lines outside of movie theaters, and tried to discourage movie-goers from seeing this movie. Products that were involved in the sponsorship of this movie were even boycotted by some.

And on her new tour, the practicing Kabbalist Madonna has now been seen in a parody of the crucifixion, in front of a back-lit cross and wearing a crown of thorns. I can only imagine the backlash of self-righteous indignation that surely awaits her.

All of these examples serve to remind me of these words that were spoken by our Savior to the religious leaders of His day approximately 2,000 years ago:

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” (Matthew 23:27,28 – New International Version)

Ecclesiastes 1 tells us that history will repeat itself; that there is nothing new under the sun. And just as it was in Jesus’ day, so it is in our day. The churches are led by:

“Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!” (Matthew 23:24)

Today’s Christian leaders, who are so worried about their Lord and Savior being cast in a less than positive light by worldly people who are out to make a fast buck, should first concern themselves with cleaning up their own house.

“Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye;’ and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite, first remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:3-5)

Today’s Evangelical Christian community does indeed go to great lengths to point out everything that is wrong with what others are doing and saying about Jesus Christ. And yet they are the ones who are committing the ultimate blasphemy by teaching that our merciful and loving heavenly Father will burn all unrepentant sinners in a mythical place called “hell” for all eternity!

Quite ironic, isn’t it? They are the ones who have truly SWALLOWED THE CAMEL!

FROM WHERE DID WE GET THE WORD CHURCH?

FROM WHERE DID WE GET THE WORD CHURCH?

NOTE: Most of the following research was compiled by a fellow believer, who,

for personal reasons, has chosen not to have his name affiliated with this site.

Walk up to almost any church of any denomination in any nation on earth, and it immediately distinguishes itself from all other kinds of buildings. First, you might notice near the highway or on the sidewalk, a marquee with a name such as, Church of the Nazarene, or First Baptist Church, or Our Lady Catholic Church. These unique buildings we call churches have many things in common, not the least of which is the designation of the word “church” itself. What does the word “church” mean, and from where did it come? The Scriptures? No. The word “church” is neither Hebrew nor Greek, so when these languages were translated into English Bibles, the word church was already in existence.

The word “church” found in most (not all) Bibles is translated from the Greek word “ekklesia,” and it means “called out ones.” The word “church” is defined in most dictionaries as: “A building for public worship, especially Christian worship; the company of all Christians as a spiritual body.” This, however, tells us nothing concerning the origin of this word and its original definition, meaning, and usage. Some theologians have erroneously stated that the word church comes from the Greek “kyrios” which means “lord,” and thus “church” is those who belong to the Lord, or references the “Lord’s house.” This is not, however, the origin or original meaning of the word “church.”

“Church” is a very early English word that means “circle” (the shape of a circle), while the Greek word translated “church” is “ekklesia” and means “called out ones,” and more properly answers to the English words: congregation, assembly or group.

In Acts 19:32 ekklesia refers to a riotous mob. And ekklesia is never applied to a building for worship. Furthermore, there can be only one “Lord’s House,” and that was the temple in Jerusalem, only. Local congregations and synagogues or assembly halls were never designated “The Lord’s House.”

“Bethel” is the word for “Lord’s House” in Hebrew. Yet, this “Lord’s House” became an abomination to the Lord, along with all other such “Lord’s houses.”

“For the saying that he cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass… Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places… And this thing became SIN unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth” (I Kings 13:32-34).

And so, in rebelling to God’s commands, “Bethels” were built throughout the land. And just as Israel continually looked to the heathen for their religious practices (see Jeremiah 10:1-5, for example), so did the heathens borrow from Israel. These “Bethels” or “houses of the Lord” became popular among the heathens. Bethels were being built throughout Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. They usually used the Greek spelling “baetyls,” but they were the same high, religious places of worship, which God condemned. So even if a “Bethel” was a “house of the Lord,” it was still condemned by God. Here are the historical facts regarding the word “Bethel” [From the Dictionary of Proper Names and Places in the Bible, by O. Odelain and R. Seguineau, Doubleday & Company, 1981]:

The word Bethel literally means “House of God,” and was the name of a town about 17 km north of Jerusalem on the road to Shechem. Bethel was also the name of a Canaanite deity venerated at Bethel. In the ancient world Bethel is one of the camping places of Abraham and Jacob. From there Abraham sees the land God is giving him. It is also here where the dream of “Jacob’s ladder” occurs, and where God later appears to Jacob. Thus Bethel becomes a sanctuary of the patriarchs. Along with Ai, it is one of the first towns conquered by Joshua. Later, in the ninth century the town is the residence of a brotherhood of prophets centered around Elijah and Elisha. It also becomes for the Northern Kingdom the national center of worship, with its golden calf, “the sin of Jeroboam.” Amos pronounces God’s judgment upon this cult (Amos 3:13-15; 5:4-7), and is expelled from Bethel by the priest Amaziah. Hosea waxes ironical about Bethel, the “House of God,” that it has become Beth-aven (Hosea 5:8; 10:5), which means “the house of nothingness (or iniquity).” Josiah’s religious reform affects Bethel, where these altars and high places are destroyed (see II Kings 23:15-20).

Now concerning the word “church,” Professor Smith of Smith’s Dictionary of the Bible states that “church” comes from a word meaning “circle,” which is akin to our word “circus.” Professor Lipsius (German theologian during the Reformation) also shows that “church” came from “circle.” Professor A. F. Fausett of Home Bible Study Dictionary” agrees with Professor Lipsius. The exhaustive ten volume Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature under the word “church” states that:

“It was probably connected with the Latin circus, circulus, and with the Greek kuklos. Lipsius, who was the first to reject the received tradition, was probably right in his suggestion” (Vol. II, p. 322).

Robert Brown’s work The Myth of Kirke” also confirms that “kirke” (church) means “Circle” or “Circular” (p. 22).

Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, under the entry “church” adds this:

“The etymology of this word is generally assumed to be from the Greek, kurious oikos (house of God); but this is most improbable, as the word existed in all the Celtic dialects long before the introduction of the Greek. No doubt the word means ‘a circle.’ The places of worship among the German and Celtic nations were always circular [witness circular Stonehenge, one of the most ancient stone megaliths on earth]. Compare Anglo-Saxon ‘circe,’ a small church, with ‘circol,’ a circle.”

In Scotland it is called “Kirk” and in Gemany it is “Kirche,” in England it is the word “Circe” (the “c” having a “k” sound).

But according to Brown’s book, “Kirke/Circe” was also the name of a Goddess.

Kirke or Circe was the daughter of the Sun god, who was famous for taming wild animals for her circus. But get ready for this: Circe is pictured holding a golden cup in her hand mixed with wine and drugs, by which she controlled the kings of the world. Now where have we heard that before?

“And the woman [always the symbol for a church/kirke] was arrayed in purple and scarlet color [these colors symbolize wealth and high position], and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication” (Revelation 17:4).

What else are we told is in the golden cup of this church?

“…the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication” (Verse 2).

But there is something else. Remember that Brown above also mentions drugs along with wine. Is our lady church of Revelation 17:4-5 “MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH” also involved in DRUGS?

Notice what Revelation 18:23 lists among her many abominations:

“…for the merchants were the great men of the earth; for by your sorceries were all nations deceived.”

Just what are these “sorceries?”

The Greek word translated “sorceries” in this verse is pharmakeia. Dr. Strong’s first definition of this word is “medicine.” Our words “pharmacy” and “pharmaceutical” (DRUGS) are derived from this word. This harlot church peddles spiritual DRUGS to the world! And so, clearly this pagan goddess Kirke not only stamps Christian religions of the world with her name: “Kirke, Kirche, Church,” but also she is the Mystery Babylonian Harlot Church of Revelation 17 and 18. This Church has committed spiritual fornication among the leaders of the world, and has caused the inhabitants of the world to be made drunk and drugged by the contents of her golden cup.

What about you? Are you yet so drugged and drunk on this Harlot Church that you cannot see to walk the straight and narrow way of Christ, which leads to life?

ADDENDUM

This brief synopsis of the word “church” is in no way meant to be an indictment toward the many wonderful people who attend churches. Lord only knows how much worse the plight of Hurricane Katrina victims would have been if it weren’t for the generosity of the area churches, who met many personal needs where government agencies such as FEMA and the Red Cross failed. I am confident that our Lord Jesus will remember good deeds such as these on Judgment Day. But good deeds alone will not qualify one for first-resurrection status (see Matthew 7:21-23).

First of all, those who worship God must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. They must proclaim Christ as Savior of the world, and believe that He will indeed SAVE the world!

“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe [that He is the Savior of ALL men, and that He will INDEED SAVE ALL MEN]. These things command and teach. (I Timothy 4:9-11)

These are the things that our Lord commands His laborers to teach concerning Him. Now how many church pastors do you know of that are doing this? Instead, most believe and teach that our heavenly Father will cast the majority of mankind away into a fiery furnace for all eternity. Because of this erroneous teaching, they lead their flocks astray (see Jeremiah 50:6). The way to life [via the first resurrection] is indeed a narrow one.

Secondly, those who take a stand for the Truth (Jesus) must be willing to do so even in the face of violent opposition. Remember these sobering words of our Lord:

“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘ A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.” (John 15:18-20)
“Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (II Timothy 3:12)

For some, this may even mean being forsaken by the members of one’s own household:

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth… For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:34-39)

Christ will become top priority to those who wish to find the narrow way that leads to age-abiding life. Not everyone will be able to make that type of a commitment. This is why Christ tells us to “count the cost” of following Him (see Luke 14:26-33).

And finally, Christ makes it clear that it is the one who endures to the end who will be saved [or attain to age-abiding life] (see Matthew 10:22; Mark 13:13). But those who have been appointed to walk the difficult to find narrow road can take heart:

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

You will notice that it is God who began the work, and it is God who completes it!

“Now the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him. But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.” (Hebrews 10:38,39)
“He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.” (Revelation 21:7)

What is water baptism?

What is water baptism?
(Taken from part 32 of the “Heavens Declare” series)

There is a most remarkable incident which took place in relation to the glory cloud when the children of Israel came out of Egypt. This incident is little known by God’s people, but it happened to testify to us of the great purpose for which God has enveloped His presence in a cloud. “Behold, He cometh with clouds…..” It pointed forward to the great work of the Holy Spirit during this and subsequent ages. Paul refers to this event in I Cor. 10:1-2: “Moreover brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were UNDER THE CLOUD, and all passed through the sea; and were all BAPTIZED UNTO MOSES IN THE CLOUD and in the sea.” Note that Paul says that the Israelites were “all BAPTIZED… IN THE CLOUD. And then in Exodus chapter fourteen it is repeated no less than four times, that they passed “on dry land” through the midst of the sea. Now, how can you pass through on dry ground and at the same time be BAPTIZED IN THE CLOUD AND IN THE SEA? The fact is, God baptized those Israelites on dry ground. The sea was indeed rolled back by a great wind and the ground became dry, but let us notice in Ps. 77:15-20 what else happened at that time. “When Thou with Thine arm redeemed Thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. The WATERS saw Thee, O God, the waters saw Thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled. The CLOUDS POURED OUT WATER: the skies sent out a sound: Thine arrows also went abroad. Thou leddest Thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.” The CLOUDS P-O-U-R-E-D O-U-T W-A-T-E-R when the children of Israel had crossed the Red Sea by the hand of Moses! How many of my readers ever heard of that storm? Israel was thus “baptized” IN THE CLOUD, as they had been “baptized” in the sea!

THE WATER-POURER

The above story has not been understood because multitudes of the Lord’s people equate “baptism” only with immersion, or one being dipped into or put under water. They claim that in every case of scriptural baptizing the person or thing baptized is moved or put into or under the baptizing element. The truth is, however, that in the vast majority of cases in scripture, if not in every case, the baptizing element or instrumentality is moved and put upon the person or thing baptized. Contrary to the teaching of many, and contrary even to certain scholars, “baptize” does not mean to “dip.” Ultimately it is usage that determines the meaning of words in any language. In classic Greek the word baptizo is never used in the modern evangelical sense of putting a body into water and then immediately withdrawing it. It cannot be denied by those who know and love the truth that the Sign of Aquarius tells us far more about the true “baptism in the Spirit” than all the modern-day preachers have ever learned from the Word of God!

Now, what saith the Lord as to the mode of this real Spirit baptism, and this symbolical water baptism? Open your Bible and look into this matter very carefully, with humility and reverence, and you will find that never once is the person represented as being “dipped,” “plunged” or “immersed” into the baptizing element or agency, but uniformly the baptizing element or agency is “poured out,” or in some way comes upon the person baptized. The apostles were baptized with the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:5; 2:1-4), and the Spirit was “poured out” on them (Acts 2:16-33); they were baptized with fire (Mt. 3:7), and a tongue of fire come down from heaven and “sat upon each of them” (Acts 2:2-3). The children of Israel were baptized with or by or in the cloud, and the cloud “poured our water” upon them (Ps. 77:16-17; I Cor. 10:1-2). Noah and his family were baptized with the flood (I Pet. 3:20-21), and they rode safe and dry over its waves as it “rained” upon them for forty days and forty nights. Three thousand Jews received water baptism during the few closing hours of a single day, and in a city where there was no place the leaders and rulers would permit to be used for immersion. Paul was baptized in his own room (Acts 9:17-18). The inspired record says: “Anastas ebapisthe,” that is, “having stood up, he was baptized.” The jailer at Philippi was converted in the jail, at the midnight hour, and we are told that there “he was baptized, he and all his, straightway” (Acts 16:33). Cornelius and his household having had the Spirit fall on them and poured out upon them, water was brought and poured out on them, if the symbol is in any way to correspond to the reality (Acts 10:44-48). The Saviour was baptized with His sufferings (Lk. 12:50) and His sufferings were “laid upon Him” (Isa. 53:6). The Great Baptizer is Christ Himself, and He baptizes His people with the Holy Ghost when He “pours out His Spirit upon them (Tit. 3:5-6).

In Heb. 3:10, the inspired writer, speaking of the Old Testament rituals, ceremonies and ordinances, says, “Which stood only in meals and drinks, and divers washings imposed on them until the time of reformation.” The word translated “washings” refers to the ceremonial purifications under the law and is from the Greek word BAPTISMOIS, that is, baptisms. Can we ascertain the mode of these baptisms? Yes, with infallible certainty. In the very same chapter the apostle refers to the mode of these ceremonial purifications no less than three times and declares that it was by sprinkling. “For if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh. How much more shall the blood of Christ purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Heb. 9:13). “For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people…. moreover he sprinkled…. both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry” (Heb. 9:19-21). In Num. 19:17-18 we read of a ceremonial purification, or “baptism,” and we read: “A clean person shall take hyssop and dip it in the water and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels and upon the persons.” In Lev. 14:5-7 we read how a leper was to be cleansed: “And he shall sprinkle upon him that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean.” A leprous house was to be cleansed in the same manner, by sprinkling (Lev. 14:50-52). And so in the case of other ceremonial baptisms there is no case on record in which an Israelite administered any of the ceremonial baptisms by putting the person or thing under water. Not one! In every case the baptism or cleansing was by sprinkling or pouring out water. When the whole Israelitish nation entered into covenant with God at Sinai, Moses “sprinkled all the people” (Ex. 24:8; Heb 9:19). On the great day of atonement the High Priest entered the Most Holy Place, and sprinkled the Ark of the Covenant (Lev. 4:17; Heb 9:25). When the destroying angel passed over Egypt, only the blood-sprinkled were afforded protection (Ex. 12:7-13). When king David sinned he cried, “Purge me with hyssop,” that is, sprinkle me with water or blood from the wetted hyssop, “and I shall be clean” (Ps. 51:7). When speaking of the spiritual cleansing effected by the blood of Christ, of which water baptism was the sign to believing Jews, Paul says, “the blood of sprinkling” (Heb 12:24); and Peter calls it “the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ” (I Pet. 1:2). In all casts of the use of either water or blood in the Old Testament as a means of purification, sanctification or anointing sprinkling or pouring were the mode used. And in Heb 9:10 the apostle speaks of these ceremonial purifications, and calls them baptisms (baptismois). The Spirit’s work is from Genesis to Revelation represented as a “pouring,” a “sprinkling,” a “coming down,” a “shedding forth,” and coming as the “rain” and the “dew”. In the New Testament the Spirit of God is represented as descending, pouring out, shedding forth, falling upon, coming upon, sent from on high, to be drunk as water, anointing, sealing, breathed upon them, ministered to them, given to them, and received by them.

It is not my purpose in this writing to provoke a debate concerning the mode of water baptism. What you may or may not believe about external rituals, outward ceremonies, and natural ordinances is, in my opinion, but a paltry side issue of no spiritual significance and no eternal importance. All natural things are but types and shadows to our understanding of spiritual things. Properly understood they open the door of understanding to the sacred secrets of God. All natural things have their spiritual counterparts, but I have absolutely no interest at all in seeking to establish or promote any external ritual, outward ceremony or carnal ordinance, for I declare to you that in this day, for those who have left the Outer Court and the Holy Place to find an entrance into the glory of the Holiest of all, the shadows have all passed away and reality has dawned within our hearts. Turn! oh sons and daughters of the Most High, from all these religious vanities, for the true light now shineth and the physical ceremonies having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with water, or formulas, or bread, or wine, or hands, or fleshly ministrations make the recipients thereof perfect. Depart from the carnal realm of empty and lifeless forms and flee away to the celestial heights in the mountain of God from whence streams the quickening and transforming river of Life from the presence of the Lord. One wonderful day, the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles in old Jerusalem, Jesus our Lord stood up and cried aloud to the people: “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (Jn. 7:37-38). That, oh child of God, is the secret to eternal blessedness. Not only does He pour the water upon us, but our faith and union with the living Christ of God makes us the source of rivers of living waters, ceaseless in their abundant flow forever and ever and ever.

FREE WILL AND THE BEAST

FREE WILL AND THE BEAST

“Science promised man power… But, as so often happens when people are seduced by promises of power, the price is servitude and impotence. Power is nothing if it is not the power to choose.” – Joseph Weizenbaum; scientist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Rene Descartes (1596-1650, French mathematician, philosopher), one of the founders of modern science, believed that the universe and all of the things in it were automata. From his time to the beginning of the 20th century, and perhaps because of him, our ancestors began to see the universe as a Great Machine. Over the next three hundred years they developed science (physics) specifically to discover how the Great Machine worked. (Gary Zukav, The Dancing Wu Li Masters, p. 22-23)

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727, English mathematician, physicist) was another forefather of modern science. According to the determination of Newtonian physics – if the universe really is a great machine – then from the moment that the universe was created and set into motion, everything that was to happen in it was already determined. We may seem to have a will of our own and the ability to alter the course of events in our lives, but we do not. Everything, from the beginning of time, has been predetermined, including our illusion of having a free will. The universe is a prerecorded tape playing itself out in the only way that it can. The status of men is immeasurably more dismal than it was before the advent of science. The Great Machine runs blindly on, and all things in it are but cogs. (ibid., p. 26)

EINSTEIN’S SPECIAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY

According to Newtonian physics, our three-dimensional reality is separate from, and moves forward in, a one-dimensional time. The Newtonian view of space and time is a dynamic picture. Events develop with the passage of time. Time is one-dimensional and moves forward. The past, present, and future happen in that order. Not so, says Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity. Our reality is four-dimensional, and the fourth dimension is time. We live, breathe, and exist in a four-dimensional space-time continuum. The special theory of relativity says that it is preferable, and more useful, to think in terms of a static, non-moving picture of space and time. This is the space-time continuum. In this static picture, events do not develop, they just are! If we could view our reality in a four-dimensional way, we would see that everything that now seems to unfold before us with the passing of time, already exists in toto, painted, as it were, on the fabric of space-time. We would see all, the past, the present, and the future with one glance. Of course, this is only a mathematical proposition (isn’t it?). (ibid., p. 150) Or is it?

“Known to God from eternity are all His works.” (Acts 15:18)
“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.” (Isaiah 46:10)

God’s Word seems to have verified what Einstein “theorized” about the space-time continuum.

CAUSE AND EFFECT

Any chemist can verify that most chemicals do react to stimulation. Under the right conditions, for example, sodium reacts to chlorine (by forming sodium chloride – salt), iron reacts to oxygen (by forming iron oxides – rust), and so on, just as humans react to food when they are hungry and to affection when they are lonely. How do we know that our responses are not as rigidly preprogrammed as those of a chemical, with the only difference being that our programs are enormously more complex? We may not have any more freedom of action than stones do, although, unlike stones, we deceive ourselves into thinking that we do! (ibid., p. 46)

In regards to this concept of man’s “free will,” we have just seen a few thoughts from some of the most insightful men of our era. Albert Einstein (1879-1955), who was a Jew and a believer in God, denied any such thoughts of mankind having “free will,” contrary to the belief of most “theologians” today. So what does the Word of God have to say on this subject? Plenty! In this article we shall examine several passages from the Holy Scriptures that emphatically deny what is being taught worldwide concerning man’s “free will” and his ability to either choose or to reject Christ.

WHAT IS FREE WILL?

According to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition (p. 465), the term “free will” means:

  • voluntary choice or decision < I do this of my own free will >
  • freedom of humans to make choices that are not determined by prior causes or divine intervention

So the million-dollar question is this: Does God allow humans the freedom to choose for themselves, or have all of their “choices” been predetermined?

QUESTION: Could Judas have chosen of his own free will to remain loyal to Christ?

PROPHECY: Psalm 41:9

FULFILLED: John 13:18; 17:12

PROPHECY: Zechariah 11:12,13

FULFILLED: Matthew 27:3-10

PROPHECY: Psalm 109:8

FULFILLED: Acts 1:26 (Matthias chosen by men, Paul later chosen by God)

In the case of Judas Iscariot his destiny was foretold in the Scriptures; therefore, God had to influence his decision making process in order to bring to fruition the ancient prophecies concerning him. Moreover, it was Christ Himself who chose His betrayer:

“Did I not chose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” (John 6:70)

It doesn’t sound to me like Judas had much choice in the matter.

“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition [or instruction], upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” (I Corinthians 10:11)

Here are 35 examples from God’s Word that clearly refute this “free will” concept:

II Chronicles 18:19-22 “And the LORD said, ‘Who will persuade Ahab king of Israel to go up, that he may fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ So one spoke in this manner, and another in that manner. The LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these prophets of yours, and the LORD has declared disaster against you.”

In this story, King Ahab was persuaded by his false prophets to go to war, which resulted in disaster. Did you notice who it was who put the lying spirits in the mouths of all of his prophets?

Amos 3:6 “Shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?” (KJV)

Isaiah 45:7 “I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.” (KJV)

Isaiah 13:11 “And I have appointed on the world evil, And on the wicked their iniquity, And have caused to cease the excellency of the proud, And the excellency of the terrible I make low.” (Young’s Literal Translation)

Despite the common misconception that it is man (either through his wickedness or his unbelief) who brings evil upon himself, God’s Word clearly says otherwise.

Job 14:5 “Since [man's] days are determined, the number of his months is with You; You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.”

Despite our advances in modern science and technology, God has numbered our days.

Psalm 139:16 “Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.”

He directs our very steps:

Proverbs 20:24 “A man’s steps are of the LORD; how then can a man understand his own way?”

Jeremiah 10:23 “O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.”

Job 23:13,14 “But He is unique, and who can make Him change? And whatever His soul desires, that He does. For He performs what is appointed for me, and many such things are with Him.”

He has purposed to perform His will and to do all His pleasure:

Romans 11:36 “For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things…”

Acts 15:18 “Known to God from eternity are all His works.”

Job 42:2 “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.”

Isaiah 46:10 “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.”

Daniel 4:32,35 “…the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand…”

Acts 4:28 “They gathered to do everything that you, by your power and will, had already decided would take place.” (Today’s English Version)

Ephesians 1:11 “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.”

We are all in the hands of the Great Potter, who is molding each and every one of us according to His will and according to His good pleasure.

Jeremiah 18:6 “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter?” says the LORD. “Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.”

It is God who hardens the heart. (Need I remind anyone of the Exodus story?)

Proverbs 21:1 “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.”

Isaiah 63:17 “O LORD, why have You made us stray from Your ways, and hardened our heart from Your fear?”

He even puts words in our mouths:

Proverbs 16:1 “The preparations of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.”

He has chosen to make some vessels for honor:

Acts 22:14 “The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth.”

Romans 8:29,30 “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.”

John 1:12,13 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

John 6:44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 15:16 “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you…”

Ephesians 1:4,5 “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the pleasure of His good will.”

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Philippians 2:13 “For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

II Thessalonians 2:13 “But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.”

II Timothy 1:9 “[God] has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.”

I Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

And some to be vessels for dishonor:

Psalm 58:3 “The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.”

Isaiah 48:8 “Surely you did not hear, surely you did not know; Surely from long ago you ear was not opened. For I knew that you would deal very treacherously, and were called a transgressor from the womb.”

I Peter 2:8 “They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.”

Revelation 13:8 “All who dwell on the earth will worship him [the beast], whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

If you have not been chosen to walk the difficult to find narrow road [the way of life], which leads to the kingdom of God, then you will worship the beast.

WHO IS THE BEAST, AND WHO CAN MAKE WAR WITH HIM?

God recently allowed me the privilege of meeting with some Mormon missionaries. The reason I say that it was a “privilege” is for the simple reason that He was able to teach me several things in the process.

Briefly defined, Mormonism in a nutshell appears to go something like this:

    1. You must come to the belief that the Book of Mormon is true, and that Joseph Smith (the author/translator of their book) was a prophet of God.
    2. You must be baptized into the Latter Day Saints Church, which is God’s only “true” church on the earth today.
    3. Maintaining a regiment of good works is essential in order to attain the highest glory in heaven, which they refer to as the “Celestial Kingdom.”

As I began to study the Book of Mormon, one thing in particular really caught my attention. Besides the typical threats of hell and endless torment (which are great proselytizing tools), I soon found out that the Mormon “holy book” teaches that man has free will. Here is one passage that clearly defines this:

“Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh [God's Word says we are born "slaves to sin"]; and all things are given to them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit; and choose not eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom.” – 2 Nephi 2:27-29

One evening I met with a couple of their missionaries. I had made a list of about 30 passages from God’s Word which refute this idea of man’s supposed “free will,” most of which we have already covered. As we were going through the list one by one, it didn’t take long before they both began to raise their voices in protest, with questions such as: “Well then, why are we here?” “Why do anything, then?” “Do you mean to say that we are all robots?” Now if my interpretation is correct, what I really heard them saying was simply this: “If we cannot, by our own free will, choose to please God by our own good works, then what’s the point of doing anything?” Now I realize that what I was trying to show them was some pretty profound truth, but to them, it sounded like utter foolishness, which is not surprising, for:

“the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (I Corinthians 2:14)

Spiritually minded men (and a few brilliant scientists) would have been able to accept these truths; instead, the carnally minded beast reared its ugly head:

“who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God [capable of making his 'own' choices].” (II Thessalonians 2:4)

The natural man does not want to give up his illusion of having a free will, for by it he attains his own righteousness (see Isaiah 64:6), with statements like: “I have accepted Christ as my Savior!” “I have been baptized!” “I go to church twice a week!” “I give ten percent of my money to the church!” Now many will protest by saying that it is their love for Jesus Christ that persuades them to do good works, and that’s fine. There is nothing wrong with doing good works; in fact, good works are admirable! But the natural man has been erroneously taught that it is by his ‘own choice’ for Christ that has gotten him saved, whereas the Word of God teaches that God had already made that choice for each and every one of us from the foundation of the world:

“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” (II Timothy 1:9 – KJV)

I had to tell my Mormon friends that I didn’t see much difference between their system of belief as compared with other systems of belief. All man-made institutions that promise salvation are nothing more than little Towers of Babel “whose top may reach unto heaven” (Genesis 11:4 – KJV). Listen to a parallel passage from the book of Isaiah concerning the King of Babylon:

“For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God… I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’” (Isaiah 14:13,14)

Although this passage [you will note the repeated use of the phrase "I will"] speaks first and foremost of a literal King of Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar?), it is also symbolic of all of us “little kings” (no beer pun intended) who have likewise in our own hearts said the same thing. The Book of Daniel quotes King Nebuchadnezzar as saying:

“Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?” (Daniel 4:30)

The mighty king, filled with pride because of the great things he had accomplished during his lifetime, was about to learn a tough lesson in humility. While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven:

“King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you! And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times [years?] shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.” (Daniel 4:31,32)

First of all, you will note that it was “they” who drove the mighty king from his lofty position. Now, from the text we cannot determine who “they” are. But given the previous examples in II Chronicles 18 and Job 1:6-12, I think it is safe to assume that these were unclean spirits that were sent forth by the LORD Himself for the purpose of humbling the mighty king.

Secondly, I find it extremely interesting that this proud man was made like unto a “beast” that was put on open display for all to see. And much like the prodigal son, who “came to himself” (see Luke 15:11-32) while feeding alongside the swine, the once-mighty king also came to his senses:

“And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever. For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand, or say to Him, ‘What have you done?’” (Daniel 4:34,35)

After being humbled by God, Nebuchadnezzar finally learned the lesson that God is in control of ALL THINGS.

“So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.” (Romans 9:16)

When will the organized church finally get the message?

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14 – KJV)

This is God’s exhortation to His people [Christians] who are called by His name. You will note that the first item on this list is humility. King Nebuchadnezzar first had to be humbled by God before he finally understood. All too often, people within the organized church will try to do these things in reverse order: first they seek God, then they pray and ask His help in overcoming their evil ways, and then they go to Bible study in order to learn the meaning of “true humility.” And all the while, they are not able to see that the beast – their idol of self-will and self-determination – is still planted firmly upon the throne of their hearts:

“whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.” (II Thessalonians 2:8)

On the Day of the Lord, just as in the case of Nebuchadnezzar, this “lawless one” will be revealed for all to see. Those who are being called to be saints will continue to look for the appearance of the great world leader to whom they refer as the “Antichrist.” Those who are being chosen to be saints clearly understand who this “antichrist” is. He has clearly been revealed in our time, and he is us!

“If anyone has an ear, let him hear.” (Revelation 13:9)

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

Turn on the news just about any day of the week and you can see various groups of people whom many Christians might view as their “enemies.” A short list may include the following:

  • Liberal politicians who voted to have the Ten Commandments monument removed from the Alabama courthouse
  • Those who live or promote a gay lifestyle
  • Abortion clinic surgeons who shed innocent blood
  • “Cults” such as the Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses
  • Radical Islamic fundamentalists who use violence in an attempt to convert the world to their way of belief

Rather than accept these individuals as those who are precious in the sight of God, there is all too often the tendency to look down upon them as “inferiors.” Despite the plea of our Lord Jesus to love them, we instead hate them.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:43-45)

THE PROBLEM WITH FEAR-DRIVEN THEOLOGY

Islamic fundamentalists would undoubtedly prefer first to convert the world through peaceful measures. However, if this method fails to have the desired outcome, it is then that they may be inclined to take a more violent approach. Christianity also seeks to peacefully convert the world by sharing the Love of Christ, but if that fails, they are then quick to play the “hell” card. So can you please tell me how Christian evangelistic methods are any different than the ones used by Islam? Both end up resorting to violence and threats; the main difference being that Islam resorts to physical violence, while Christianity, on the other hand, resorts to spiritual violence.

A fear-driven theology, by its very nature, inhibits one’s capacity to love. When evangelists convince someone that they must turn to Christ or face the grim eternal consequences, then all of the individual’s attention becomes focused upon securing his or her survival. This type of self-motivated behavior only leads people further away from the love of God.  Where fear is encouraged, love subsides.

Some of the early church fathers, including Clement of Alexandria (150-220), Origen (185-254), and John Chrysostom (347-407), knew the concept of an eternal hell was not true, but taught it as though it were, believing it to be an effective means whereby sin could be deterred and converts won. Because he considered it a part of the Gnostic or esoteric knowledge which might not be well for the unenlightened to hear, lest it should result in the injury of the ignorant, Clement says: “As to the rest I am silent and praise the Lord.” He “fears to set down in writing what he would not venture to read aloud.” He thinks this knowledge not useful for all, and that the fear of hell may keep sinners from sin.

The historian Neander says that Chrysostom also believed in universal salvation, but felt the opposite doctrine was necessary to alarm the multitude. He must have also been one of those esoteric believers who found the doctrine of endless punishment necessary to the welfare of sinners, and on that account he had preached it:

“There is a good deceit such as many have been deceived by, which one ought not even to call a deceit at all,” instancing that of Jacob, “which was not a deceit, but an economy.” (Homil. vi. in Col. ii. 8)

It is obvious that Origen also believed this truth to be privileged information for a few and not expedient for the masses when he wrote the following:

“But the remarks which might be made on this topic are neither to be made to all, nor to be uttered on the present occasion; for it is not unattended with danger to commit to writing the explanation of such subjects, seeing the multitude need no further instruction than that which relates to the punishment of sinners; while to ascend beyond this is not expedient, for the sake of those who are with difficulty restrained, even by fear of eternal punishment, from plunging into any degree of wickedness, and into the flood of evils which result from sin.” – Contra Celsus VI 26

According to The Dictionary of Christian Biography, Origen believed that “men must be treated as children, and the terrors of the judgment rather than the final restoration have to be brought before those who can be converted only by fears and threats.” Origen then declares that sinners who are “incurable” are converted by the threat of punishment:

“As to the punishments threatened against the ungodly, these will come upon them after they have refused all remedies, and have been, as we may say, visited with an incurable malady of sinfulness. Such is our doctrine of punishment; and the inculcation of this doctrine turns many away from their sins.” – Contra Celsus VIII 39,40

But if this is true, then even serving God and others become acts of selfishness. For years I served God not necessarily because I wanted to, but because I feared the consequences of not serving Him. Self-motivated, fear-induced behavior is a sign of immaturity, and shows that the individual has not yet been perfected in God’s Love.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” (I John 4:18 – KJV)

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (II Timothy 1:7 – KJV)

Although wisdom, or knowledge begins with the fear of the LORD (Proverbs 1:7), transformation can only take place when God’s perfect Love casts out this fear, assuring us that we’ll never be abandoned or destroyed.

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38,39)

Many godly men in the early church did not fulfill their commission to fully preach the pure gospel of Christ. They failed to heed Paul’s words regarding this matter:

“Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.” (II Corinthians 5:18,19)

“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. These things command and teach.” (I Timothy 4:9-11)

Although there is probably a minority within church leadership today that knows the truth of God’s plan to save all men, they also will not teach these truths for many of the same reasons the early church fathers would not. But I am convinced that the vast majority of our pastors, teachers, and theologians today teach falsehoods out of ignorance. They have not been diligent in their search for truth.

“We find few historians who have been diligent enough in their search for truth; it is their common method to take on trust what they help distribute to the public; by which means a falsehood once received from a famed writer becomes traditional to posterity.” – John Dryden (1631-1700) English Poet

The journey on the narrow road that leads to the life of the ages can only begin by coming to the realization that God loves us unconditionally. We must abandon this misconception that we are rejected because of our bad behavior or accepted because of our goodness. Only when we repent of these types of self-motivated beliefs and focus upon God’s Love can His Love alter us. Only then can He transform hearts darkened by sin and soften hearts hardened by self-righteousness.

Before I came to an understanding of God’s plan to save all mankind, I found Jesus’ commandment to “love our enemies” rather difficult to follow. It seemed as though I was always able to find fault with others for various things. In fact, my attitude was very similar to the Pharisee who was quick to thank God that he was not like the publican that was mentioned in Luke’s gospel (see Luke 18:9-14). In my case I was thankful to God for not being like a certain Re-publican.

It is precisely attitudes like these that have led many people in the world today to believe that there is no way God could ever accept them because of all of the evil things they have done. And likewise, there are many who believe that because they belong to the right group, recited the right prayer of repentance and got baptized in the right manner, that somehow these acts of ‘righteousness’ have earned them God’s favor. Both groups are sadly mistaken.

“What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are under sin. As it is written:

There is none righteous, no, not one;

There is none who understands;

There is none who seeks after God.

They have all turned aside;

They have together become unprofitable;

There is none who does good, no, not one.”

(Romans 3:9-13 – NKJV)

“We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.” (Isaiah 64:6 – RSV)

A theology of love is grounded in the realization that God loves our enemies as much as He loves us. And this is the irony of Jesus’ commandment to love our enemies.     We are ALL being created in God’s image. We are ALL precious in His sight. We are ALL children of God. Once we grasp this concept, we will see others in a brand new light. We will no longer see them as our enemies, but as our brothers and sisters, fellow heirs of God’s grace.

WHO IS THE ENEMY?

Since this article is concerned with the subject of loving one’s enemies, it would be incumbent upon us to take a closer look at the Biblical definition of the word “enemy.” All throughout the New Testament, according to Strong’s Concordance, the Greek word used to represent the word “enemy” is echthros (G#2190), which means: an adversary (especially Satan). Let’s take a look now at a few examples of how this word is used in the Scriptures:

1.      “Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, ‘If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.’” (Luke 19:41-44)

A devout Jew that was familiar with Daniel’s prophecy (see Daniel 9:24-27) of the coming Messiah should have known that this was time of their visitation, the very day of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Jesus wept over the city, for these truths were hidden from them. Therefore, Christ pronounces judgment upon the great city, and the certainty of its destruction. This prophecy was later fulfilled in stunning detail when Titus of Rome led an army to put down the Jewish revolt and destroyed the city (see Josephus: War of the Jews). In this instance, Rome is described as the ‘enemy.’

2.      “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s own enemies will be those of his own household.” (Matthew 10:34-36)

Jesus Christ, otherwise known as the “Prince of Peace,” says here that He did not come to bring peace during this present wicked age. As long as there are different religious viewpoints, and as long as there is an absence of the knowledge of truth, there will be disagreements that will lead to envy, hatred, hostility, and even wars between nations, as we have witnessed all throughout our history. In many cases, this will even lead to animosity between the members of one’s own household. Those who are of the household of faith look forward to the peaceful reign of Christ which begins upon His return to judge the nations in righteousness (see Isaiah 25:6-9; 26:9).

In the next example our Lord Jesus, while explaining the parable of the tares of the field to his disciples, identifies who the real enemy, or adversary, is:

3.      “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.” (Matthew 13:37-40)

When Jesus spoke this parable to the masses, He wasn’t talking about a simple farmer in Judea who was struggling to keep the weeds out of his crops. The simple fact that Jesus had to take time out to explain this parable to his disciples should be proof enough that nothing He said in it should be taken literally, yet this is exactly what orthodox Christianity does when it comes to God’s judgment by fire.

The “fire” of which Jesus is speaking is God’s divine judgment that will burn away the wood, hay, and stubble for the purpose of saving the man (see I Corinthians 3:12-15), not tormenting him. The Greek word pur (Strong’s #4442) is translated as “fire,” and according to A Pocket Lexicon to the Greek New Testament, can mean:

“Either literally, metaphorically, and eschatologically (as an instrument of punishment in the conceptions of later Judaism, the fire of the Divine wrath which burns in Gehenna).”

(For more on this, be sure to read the article Hell: Biblical Truth or Pagan Myth?)

4.      “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:19,20)

Jesus is not referring to the literal handling of poisonous snakes and scorpions, a practice that many of us have heard about in some remote mountainous regions of West Appalachia. What Jesus is really referring to is the power that He has given to His witnesses (those who have the true testimony of Jesus Christ – Revelation 19:10) to expose false doctrine within the church.

5.      “These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies.” (Revelation 11:4,5)

Once again, we are not talking about a literal flame that goes forth from the mouths of these witnesses in order to burn up literal flesh and blood human beings. The “fire” (God is a consuming fire – Hebrews 12:29) is the Truth of the real gospel, which “cuts to the heart” and is able to pull down the strongholds (I saw Satan fall like lightning) that keep God’s people in bondage.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” (II Corinthians 10:4)

Many of us have been taught that a Spirit-filled, born-again believer cannot be “possessed” by the devil. Those who wish to argue this point should take a closer look at Mark 1:21-28, where Jesus heals a man with an unclean spirit. And guess where Jesus found this man? Did He find him sitting half-drunk in the local pub? Was he getting a lap dance in the local brothel? No. Jesus found this apparently religious man sitting unnoticed, in the midst of the people in their synagogue! And if you take an honest look at today’s church, there really isn’t that much difference between the majority of the people in the churches as opposed to many self-seeking, worldly people. In fact, all one needs to do is watch the local news at night to see that there are many good church-going people who get caught up in the same types of vices as worldly people. Jesus said that we would know them by their fruits. The spiritual wickedness in high places does indeed extend well beyond the realm of government.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

“The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, for they are spiritually discerned.” (I Corinthians 2:14)

The ones whom God has blessed with spiritual eyes to see spiritual things will always try to look a little deeper into God’s Word in order to learn more profound truths.

“For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.” (I Corinthians 2:10)

What I am about to share with you is one of the more profound truths that God has recently revealed to me concerning the subject of “loving our enemies.”

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12 – KJV)

According to this passage of Scripture, our real enemies are not defined in terms of flesh and blood. In other words, people, regardless of their race, creed, national, political or religious affiliation, are NOT our enemies. This is why we are commanded to love them in the same way that we love ourselves. Our REAL enemies are more accurately defined as principalities, powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places.

Now here’s the shocker: The spiritual man must move to the point where he can learn to love even these! Let me repeat myself once again: The spiritual man WILL LEARN TO LOVE EVEN THESE ENEMIES! Now before you are convinced that I have really gone off my rocker this time, please bear with. I will assure you that my sole purpose for this article is to glorify God. But first, you must be able to see that ALL THINGS are working according to the big picture and plan of our sovereign LORD.

THE PROBLEM WITH DUALISM

Fundamental Christianity promotes what is commonly referred to as a “dualistic theology,” which has its roots in Persian Zoroastrianism. In other words, God is opposed to Satan, and Satan is warring against God. According to R.C. Zaehner, who was for years regarded as one of the leading authorities on the ancient religion of Zoroaster, “God was so completely identified with goodness and righteousness that it became unthinkable that he could be even indirectly responsible for evil.” The Scriptures, however, clearly teach otherwise [See Job 26:13; Isaiah 45:7; Amos 3:6].

*NOTE: Zoroastrians do not believe in a place of everlasting punishment. According to Zaehner: “God does not condemn his creatures to eternal torment for sins, however terrible, committed in time. These are punished, and punished severely, in a temporal Hell over which Ahriman (Satan) and his demons preside; but no good God could mete out eternal punishment to his creatures, no matter how grave their sins, for this would be contrary both to his goodness and to his justice. To suppose otherwise is to attribute qualities to God which properly belong to the Devil; and for the Zoroastrian this is the crassest blasphemy.” – R.C. Zaehner Teachings of the Magi

As long as one holds to the church’s dualistic system of belief, my previous comment concerning the act of loving these spirits will seem preposterous. For instead of being able to see the truth that it is God Himself who sends these “ministering spirits” to instruct, correct, or discipline us, people will see these spirits acting in opposition to God, rather than for Him [See II Chronicles 18:18-22; Job 1:6-12].

It is precisely this type of false belief that has encouraged many heretical teachings in the church today, for instance, the “health and wealth” gospel. The common teaching says that if things aren’t going well for you in the terms of good health and financial blessings, then something must be amiss in your walk with God. Perhaps there is some “secret sin” in your life of which you need to repent. Maybe you’re not “tithing” to the church the required 10%, or maybe you’re not stepping out in your faith with a generous “seed” gift. Surely God wants to bless you, but unless you do what His church requires of you, His hands are tied. I wonder what today’s church would tell the apostle Paul upon learning of all the suffering that he was enduring (see II Corinthians 11:23-28)? Perhaps he wasn’t tithing the required 10%.

But Paul, unlike most Christians today, recognized God’s hand upon his own life in allowing these ‘spirits’ to buffet him:

“And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. [This ‘thorn' (whatever it may have been) in Paul's flesh was for the purpose of keeping him humbled] Concerning this thing I pleaded with the LORD three times that it might depart from me. [God's disciplinary measures toward us will not always be pleasant (Hebrews 12:11)] And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. [Paul had to learn to ‘die daily' – for Christ could not ‘increase' in his life unless he ‘decreased' (see John 3:30)]  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (II Corinthians 12:7-10)

Paul came to the point where he could take pleasure in his suffering for the sake of Christ, knowing that his reward would be great in heaven (see Luke 6:20-23). Peter reiterates this righteous attitude in his first epistle:

“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.” (I Peter 4:12-14)

James also testifies of these truths:

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (James 1:2-4)

And the author of the book of Hebrews adds the following:

If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?” (Hebrews 12:7-9)

“God’s discipline is too often mistaken for His indignation. The presence of trials and distresses are not a proof of sin and God’s anger, but may be the tokens of His love. Job’s friends tried to convince him that his calamities came as the penalty of his own misdeeds. Job himself thought that God was his enemy and had conspired against him. All were wrong, for the blessed result of a closer knowledge of his Maker fully vindicated God for all the afflictions He had brought upon him. Job had heard of Him, but after his trial he could say that he had seen Him – a more intimate acquaintance.” – A.E. Knoch, Concordant Commentary on the New Testament

Most of us are only concerned with the here and now. We have our eyes set upon earthly things. When things don’t always go the way we want them to, we have the tendency to blame God. We fail to remember that it is God Himself who causes it to rain upon both the just as well as the unjust. As a result, we are unable to see the presence of God’s hand in our disheartening circumstances, and are unaware that these are but part of the process by which He is bringing us into the larger and nearer place He has prepared for us. From our limited perspective, many things occur that we won’t understand until God’s glory is revealed. But there is great peace in having the faith that everything is going according to God’s wonderful plan.

In this ethnically and racially divided society in which we live, my greatest remaining challenge will be to treat each and every person as a beloved child of God. It is only in remembering that His wonderful grace, which is in the process of transforming me, is also at work in every other person. The triumph of Love will not be complete until every last person has been redeemed. A chosen few will experience redemption during this life, while most will experience it after death; but make no mistake about it – Love WILL triumph! For God IS Love, and LOVE NEVER FAILS!

“And I heard a great voice out of the throne saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he shall dwell with them, and they shall be his peoples, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more; neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more: the first things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:3,4 – ASV)

“Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth! Sing about the glory of his name! Tell the world how glorious he is. Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds! Your enemies cringe before your mighty power. Everything on earth will worship you; they will sing your praises, shouting your name in glorious songs.’” (Psalm 66:1-4 – NLT)

The principle of which In have interpreted the Varieties of the Offerings is one which appears to lie open to an objection. My principle, it will be remembered, is that the Varieties in the Typical Offerings represent different aspects or apprehensions of Christ’s One Offering: the different offerings giving us different aspects of His Offering; the different grades the various apprehensions of some one aspect.

In preceding pages In have briefly given the grounds for this judgment. An objection, however, may be made. It may be urged, that it is far more reasonable to suppose that God in His Word would give us representations of realities themselves rather than of certain apprehensions of the, inasmuch as since different apprehensions must be more or less imperfect, the representation of such in His word would make that Word imperfect likewise.

The plausibility of this objection makes me notice it here. It is, however, In am convinced, unsound; proceeding throughout on an assumption opposed to reason and all experience. That this assumption is not sooner detected arises from the fact that it involves questions with which but few are conversant. The objection assumes, without appearing to assume anything, certain points connected with the capabilities of our perceptive faculties. The mass of mankind are content to use their perceptive faculties without ever troubling themselves to inquire what it is those faculties deal with. Any assumption, therefore, on such subjects, takes them into an unknown sphere, where, from misapprehension of what they seem to see, their most logical conclusions, because founded on misapprehension, may, and indeed necessarily must, be most irrational.

In say the objection makes assumptions. It does so on the subject of representations, assuming it reasonable to suppose that of certain apprehensions of realities. To this In say at once, that such a supposition, so far from being reasonable, is most unreasonable. For, first, it is acknowledged that the perceptive faculty, whether of things inward or outward, deals not with realities themselves, but only with their phenomena; which phenomena, though they pre-suppose the existence of realities, are not realities, but, as the name imports, only certain appearances of them. And secondly, it is equally plain, that pictures or similar representations, (and the types are confessedly such representations,) can of necessity be conversant with phenomena only, inasmuch as they only describe or represent what the perceptive faculty takes cognizance of. It follows hence at once, that if the Types are to represent what our perceptive faculties take cognizance or, they will necessarily be representations, not of realities themselves, but of certain appearances or apprehensions of them.

In am more and more satisfied that what we see of Christ and God, though true as far as it goes, (and surely most true it is,) is yet very far short of the ineffable reality “which passeth all understanding.” Certain forms of the truth we have got: the reality, who has yet attained to know it?
